Replacing headlight bulbs (BMW 5 Series E28)
If your car radio is equipped with an anti-theft system, make sure you have entered the correct code before disconnecting the battery cable. Refer to Section Anti-theft audio system and instrument cluster language before disconnecting the wire.
If after connecting the wire, the inscriptions on your instrument panel appear in a language other than the one you need, refer to Section Anti-theft audio system and instrument cluster language, which describes the procedure for installing the required language.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Non-separable (sealed) lamps
1. Remove the radiator grille (see chapter Body).
2. Loosen the headlight mounting screws, being careful not to damage the adjusting screws.
3. Remove the holder and push the headlight outward enough to disconnect the connector.
4. Remove the headlight.
5. To install the headlight, connect the connector, install the headlight in place and insert the mounting screws. Tighten the screws securely.
6. Install the radiator grille. Connect the negative battery cable.
Halogen lamps
Halogen-filled bulbs are pressurized and may shatter if their surface is scratched or dropped. Wear safety glasses and handle these bulbs with extreme caution, holding them by the base if possible. Avoid touching the surface of the bulbs with your fingers, as the oils from your skin may cause them to overheat and fail prematurely.
If you do touch the surface of the lamp with your hands, wipe it with methyl alcohol.
1. Remove the headlight outer cover from the rear of the assembly.

2. Unscrew the inner cover from the back of the headlight.

3. Disconnect the wire from the back of the headlight bulb.

4. Lower the clamps and remove the bulb from the headlight assembly. Do not touch the surface of the bulb with your fingers.
5. Install the new bulb in the reverse order of removal. Make sure the clips hold the bulb in place.
6. Connect the negative battery cable.
