Removal and installation the ignition switch (BMW 5 Series E28)

Some of the latest models are equipped with an air bag, or Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). To avoid possible damage to this system, the manufacturer recommends that for models with an air bag, the following procedure be submitted to the competence of the dealer service department or auto repair shop, as it requires the use of special equipment and technology. There is also a risk of injury if the air bag mechanism is accidentally deployed.


If your car radio is equipped with an anti-theft system, make sure you have entered the correct code before disconnecting the battery cable. Refer to SectionAnti-theft audio system and instrument cluster language before disconnecting the wire.


If after connecting the wire, the inscriptions on your instrument panel appear in a language other than the one you need, refer to Section Anti-theft audio system and instrument cluster language, which describes the procedure for installing the required language.


Removal



1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the steering wheel (see chapter Steering).

3. Remove the steering column covers (see chapter Body).

4. Where necessary, remove the direction indicator/headlight switch (see section Removal and installation switches on the steering column).

5. Release the clamps by inserting a small screwdriver into the cavities on both sides of the ignition switch while removing the switch.



6. Disconnect the ignition switch wiring from the connector at the base of the steering column and remove the switch.

Installation



Install in reverse order.
