Removal and installation the shock absorber strut (BMW 5 Series E34)

Removal



Remove the brake caliper and secure it to the body with wire.

Caution: The brake hose remains connected, otherwise the brake system will need to be bled later.


If there is an ABS pulse sensor, remove it.

Using a wrench, separate the tension rod from the stabilizer.

Support the shock absorber strut from below with a jack so that when its upper support is released, the strut does not fall.

Loosen the lower shock absorber strut bolts.

Clean the threaded holes and bolts with a wire brush.

Remove the cap from the shock absorber column.



Unscrew the 3 nuts securing the "arrow" on the shock absorber column and pull the shock absorber down.

Caution: Do not unscrew the nut securing the 1 coil spring.


Installation



Insert the shock absorber strut from below and tighten it with new self-locking nuts to a tightening torque of 22 Nm.

Place the lower part of the shock absorber in the correct position "arrow".

Tighten the shock absorber strut from below with new bolts with a tightening torque of 110 Nm. The bolts have a locking coating and must be replaced after each unscrewing.

Tighten the tension rod to the stabilizer with a new self-locking nut with a tightening torque of 60 Nm. The surface under the key of the ball pin must be parallel to the axis of the shock absorber.

If there is an ABS pulse sensor, install it.

Install the brake caliper.
