Removal and installation the front bumper (BMW 5 Series E39)

Table of contents: Removal ↓ Installation ↓
The bumper is designed so that it can withstand impacts without damage at vehicle speeds of up to 4 km/h. The energy of a frontal collision is absorbed by an aluminum beam and two hydraulic energy-absorbing buffers. The energy-absorbing buffers are mounted on two easily replaceable deformable elements, the so-called absorbing boxes. At a collision speed of up to 15 km/h, the impact energy is absorbed through the deformation of the hydraulic buffers and absorbing boxes. Due to this, damage to the engine mount beam is prevented.

If available, disconnect the fog light plug connectors and/or disconnect the headlight cleaning system hoses. Clamp the hoses with suitable clamps to prevent fluid from leaking out.

Installation

If required, complete the bumper, see figure W-4B295.

With the help of an assistant, position the bumper horizontally. If available, connect the plug connectors of the fog lights and/or connect the hoses of the headlight cleaning system.

Insert the bumper into the side guides and push it back.

Align the bumper parallel to the body and tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 40 Nm.
