Removal and installation radio (BMW 5 Series E39)

Removal



Removal and installation are explained using an example: a BMW Business radio. The radio consists of two separate parts: the radio itself with a cassette recorder and amplifier, and a radio control unit called the Integrated Radio Information System (IRIS).

Remove the volume control button.

Insert screwdriver "1" size 3 into slot "2" next to the volume control axis and turn it 90°. Pull out the screwdriver and the radio control unit along with it on the left and unfasten it on the right.

Note: If you cannot insert the screwdriver directly into the slot, place it, turn it 90° and slide the locking plate to the right to open the slot. Rotate the screwdriver further and insert it into the slot.


Disconnect the plug. To do this, move the locking clip to the side.

Turn both Allen screws in the "3" head to the left until the radio can be easily pulled out.

Press the multi-pin plug "1" with a screwdriver. Unscrew the ground wire fastening "2". Disconnect the antenna wire "3".

Installation



Install the multi-pin plug and antenna wire on the back of the radio, screw on the ground wire.

Slide the radio into the hole in the instrument panel.

Tighten the Allen screws into the head.

Connect the multi-pin plug to the radio control unit and secure it with the clamp.

Slide the radio control unit into the instrument panel opening until it is secured by the retaining plates.

Set the volume control button.
