Removal and installation the starter (BMW 5 Series E39)
The starter is located on the side at the junction of the engine crankcase and gearbox and is removed by moving it downwards.
Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. The battery is located in the luggage compartment behind the right side trim.
Insulate the negative battery terminal to avoid accidental electrical contact.
Remove the back part lower casing of the engine compartment.
Disconnect the wires: 1 - terminal 30, directly from the positive pole of the battery; 2 - terminal 50, from the ignition switch.
Unscrew the starter mounting bolts on the gearbox side using a suitable adapter.
Remove the starter.
Check the freewheel gear and flywheel ring gear for damage.
Insert the starter and tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 50 Nm.
Connect the electrical wires and tighten terminal 30 to a torque of 10 Nm and terminal 50 to a torque of 5 Nm.
Install the rear part lower casing of the engine compartment.
Connect the ground (-) wire to the battery. Set the clock. Set the radio to transmitting radio stations.
Removal
Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. The battery is located in the luggage compartment behind the right side trim.
Caution: This will erase the contents of memory devices, such as the engine fault code memory. Follow the instructions in Chapter "Removal and installation the battery".
Insulate the negative battery terminal to avoid accidental electrical contact.
Remove the back part lower casing of the engine compartment.

Disconnect the wires: 1 - terminal 30, directly from the positive pole of the battery; 2 - terminal 50, from the ignition switch.
Note: Mark the location of the wires so that they can be installed in their original places during installation.
Unscrew the starter mounting bolts on the gearbox side using a suitable adapter.
Remove the starter.

Check the freewheel gear and flywheel ring gear for damage.
Installation
Insert the starter and tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 50 Nm.
Connect the electrical wires and tighten terminal 30 to a torque of 10 Nm and terminal 50 to a torque of 5 Nm.
Note: Route the wires in the same way as they were before removal. Make sure that they do not rub against surrounding parts.
Install the rear part lower casing of the engine compartment.
Connect the ground (-) wire to the battery. Set the clock. Set the radio to transmitting radio stations.
