Keys, single lock and remote control (BMW 7 Series E38)
Children should not be left unattended in a car with keys in it, especially if the key is inserted into the ignition. Children have a habit of imitating adults and may lock the doors from the inside, turn on the ignition or start the engine. This may result in injuries to children when using, for example, electric windows or an accident if the car starts to move.
Set of keys
The car comes with two main keys (1), a spare key (2) and a key for the doors and ignition.
Master Key fits all car locks. Each main key head has a built-in remote control (RC) for a single lock and an immobilizer chip (see section Anti-theft system).
To avoid damage to the electronic components located in the key head, do not expose it to strong mechanical loads (deformations, impacts), high temperatures and humidity.
Spare key should be kept in a safe place and used only when necessary (for example, if the main key is lost). This key does not fit the trunk lid and glove compartment locks. To obtain a new additional key, contact your BMW representative.
Key to door locks and ignition does not fit the trunk lid and glove compartment locks. This key is intended, for example, to be given to a doorman.
Remote control
The remote control uses a battery that is recharged when the key is in the ignition (with ignition on).
The battery in the main key that is not normally used should be recharged periodically (once a year).
The remote control is designed to activate/deactivate a single lock from outside the car; in addition, the remote control provides 3 additional functions that are only possible when using it:
- Switching on interior lighting and exterior door handle illumination (for example, to find a car in a dark parking lot);
- Opening the trunk lid, regardless of whether it was previously locked;
- Turn on/off the panic mode of the anti-theft alarm to draw attention to the car.
Buttons on the remote control
1 - Unlocking
2 - Locking
3 - Opening the trunk lid
1. To turn on the interior lighting and the exterior door handle illumination when the master lock is activated, press the middle button (2) on the remote control.
2. For opening the trunk lid using the remote control, press the top button (3).
3. To turn on "panic" mode press the upper button (3) of the remote control and hold it for 2-5 seconds. The panic mode is turned off by pressing the lower button (1).
4. To switch off the tilt and motion sensors in the passenger compartment, immediately press the locking button (2) again after activating the single lock (see additional information on the anti-theft system in Section Anti-theft system).
Single lock
The single lock becomes ready to operate after the front doors are closed. All doors, the trunk lid, and the fuel filler flap can be locked/unlocked from outside the vehicle (using the remote control or the key inserted into the driver's door lock), and from the inside (via the single lock button). If an accident occurs while the single lock is activated from inside the vehicle, the doors are automatically unlocked (except those that were locked separately by means of locking buttons) and the hazard warning lights and interior lighting are turned on.
Single lock control from outside the car
When activated/deactivated from the outside, the anti-theft system is simultaneously activated/deactivated.
Buttons on the remote control
1 - Unlocking
2 - Locking
3 - Opening the trunk lid
1. To unlock the driver's door, insert the key and turn it once. Alternatively, press the upper button (1) on the remote control.
2. To unlock the remaining doors, the trunk lid and the fuel filler flap, turn the key or press the upper button on the remote control again.
When the door lock is unlocked, the interior lighting and the exterior door handle illumination are switched on.
3. For convenience, you can also open/close the door windows and the upper hatch using a single lock: with the door closed, turn and hold the key to the unlock/lock position, respectively. With the remote control, you can only open the door windows and the upper hatch - hold down the upper button on the remote control.
Make sure that the windows and sunroof cover do not get jammed when closing them.
4. If the electric door lock drive fails, it can be unlocked/locked by turning the key in the appropriate direction until it stops.

When the single lock is activated from inside the vehicle, the fuel filler flap does not lock and the anti-theft system is not activated.
The single lock control button from inside the vehicle is located on the center console between the seats (No. 6).
If only the driver's door lock was unlocked to access the vehicle, then when you press this button:
- When the driver's door is open, all other doors, the luggage compartment lid and the fuel filler flap are unlocked;
- When the driver's door is closed, it locks.
1. For opening any door from the inside, either deactivate the single lock with the corresponding button (No. 6) and pull the handle above the armrest of the corresponding door, or pull the handle above the armrest of the corresponding door twice (first the lock is unlocked, then the door is opened).
Doors locked from the outside can be opened by first deactivating the master lock and then pulling the handle above the armrest twice.
2. To lock some door either activate the single lock with the corresponding button, or press the lock button on the corresponding door.
The driver's door lock button cannot be pressed until the door is closed.
Doors that have been locked separately using the locking buttons will not unlock automatically in the event of an accident.
