Remote control (BMW 5 Series E34)

The infrared signal receiver is located in the area of the rear-view mirror in the passenger compartment. The range of the remote control is about 5 meters, and there should be no screening obstacles between the remote control and the car.

When you press button (1) on the remote control, up to 5 signals are sent (LED (4) flashes up to five times).

• The central lock is activated (opening the car), the anti-theft system is disabled.
• The anti-theft alarm is disabled.
• The interior lighting comes on. When you press button (2) on the remote control (lED is blinking).
• The central lock is activated (locking the car).

If you hold down button (3) for 15 seconds while pressing button (2) (lED is blinking):

• The anti-theft system is activated.
• The anti-theft alarm system is activated.

The windows and electric sunroof can be closed using the remote control: hold down the button (2) on the remote control until it is completely closed (the LED is on). If you release the button, the movement of the glass and sunroof will immediately stop.

To remove or fold the key, press the button.

Of course, you can also use a regular key to unlock the doors and trunk.

Replacing the remote control battery

It's time to change the battery when the LED brightness decreases when you press the remote control buttons. If the LED does not light up, you will no longer be able to use the remote control.

Note: It is recommended to replace the battery in less than 1 minute. Also, do not press the remote control buttons when replacing the battery. If these conditions are not met, the remote control will need to be initialized.

To replace the battery, unscrew the screw (arrow "a"), press the button and slide the remote control cover to the side.

The battery type and its correct position are indicated in the battery holder.

Caution: Use only the specified type of batteries. Used batteries must be disposed of properly to prevent environmental pollution.

Initializing the remote control

• Turn on the ignition using the spare key (turn the key to position "2" in the ignition switch).
• Place the remote control next to the initialization block as shown in the figure.
• Press the button (1) and hold it down until the LED starts flashing (about 2 seconds). Initialization complete.

Within 15 minutes, other remote controls related to this vehicle can also be initialized (just up to four).

During this time, the ignition must not be turned off.

Initialization of the remote control is required when:

• Replace the battery if you spent more than 1 minute on it or accidentally pressed one of the buttons on the remote control.
• When purchasing a new remote control.

You can initialize the remote control as often as required.

Replacing the remote control without replacing the key

If the remote control fails, contact a BMW service station to replace the remote control. The key can be removed from the old remote control and installed on the new one. To do this, unscrew the mounting screw and remove the key.
