Rear shock absorber (BMW X3 E83)

Removal and installation the left and right rear shock absorbers



Note: Follow the instructions for replacing shock absorbers.


1. Remove the rear wheel.

2. Remove the left and/or right luggage compartment trim.

Caution: Failure to follow these instructions may cause the vehicle to slip off the lift, causing serious injury.


Note: When propping up, ensure that:
  • the car no longer rose or fell;
  • the car did not lift off the lift's support plates.


3. Support the longitudinal suspension arm with a jack (1).

4. Remove the screw.

Note:
  • The thrust disc (2) on the rubber-metal hinge must point towards the bolt head when installed.
  • Tighten the bolt when the vehicle is normally loaded.


Tightening torque: 100 Nm.

5. Unscrew and secure the noise-insulating covering (1) in the area of the upper support of the shock absorber strut.



6. Unscrew the nuts (2).

7. Remove the shock absorber together with the upper support in a downward direction.

Note: The self-locking nut must be replaced during installation.


Tightening torque: 24 Nm.

8. Remove the upper shock absorber mount.

Note: Only when replacing the shock absorber strut.


9. Remove the plate (1), bump stop (2) and protective tube (3) from the shock absorber (4).

Note: When installing, it is necessary to check and, if necessary, replace the bump stop (2) and protective tube (3).


10. Installation should be carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the above notes.

11. Check the correct position of the axle shaft in the rear axle gearbox.
