Replacing the coolant temperature sensor (BMW X5 E53)

Attention!
  • When working with oil, fuel and coolant circuits, protect the generator from contamination.
  • Collect the leaking liquid and send it for disposal.


The coolant temperature sensor must be replaced in the following order. Disconnect the "-" wire from the battery terminal and insulate it and protect the generator from contamination. Drain the coolant and send it for disposal. Remove the intake manifold and close the intake channels.

The temperature sensor installation location is located under the intake manifold (3, Fig. 6.144). Disconnect the SS from the coolant temperature sensor, unscrew and remove it.

The temperature sensor should be installed in the reverse order, replacing the sensor sealing ring. Tighten the temperature sensor to a torque of 13 N·m (1.3 kgf·m). Assemble the engine.
