Removal and installation the sliding roof panel motor (BMW 3 Series E36)
Caution: Close the sliding roof panel before removing. If the motor fails, close the panel in an emergency manner. If the panel does not close because the gearbox is jammed, see the instructions at the end of the section.
Removal
Remove the interior light lamp together with the lamp board using a narrow screwdriver.
Remove the overlay

If the sliding roof panel is open, close it manually using the key. The key is included in the on-board tool kit.

Disconnect the switch connector by moving the lock "4" to the side.

Unscrew 3 bolts -9/10- and remove the drive unit.
Note: The bolts are locked and must be replaced.

Disconnect the connector from the rear side, squeezing the tabs of the lock. Then remove the connector from the guide, remove the drive unit.
Installation
Caution: The sliding roof panel must be closed.

Before installation, make sure that the mark "6" and the journal "7" are aligned with the centers of the axes "5" of the drive unit. In this case, the motor is installed in the initial position, which corresponds to the position with the roof panel closed. If necessary, turn the motor accordingly with a rod wrench.
If there were previously observed switching defects, replace the "arrow" microswitch of the sliding roof panel at the service station.

Insert the drive unit, connect and secure with 2 short bolts "9" and 1 long bolt "10". Be sure to install new bolts. If new bolts are missing, pre-coat the bolt threads with locking paste.
Connect the switch connector.
Install the trim and interior light.
If it is impossible to close the sliding roof panel because the drive gear is jammed, proceed as follows:
Remove the defective motor.
Install a new motor.
Close the sliding roof panel in an emergency manner (bring it to its original position).
Remove the new motor.
Bring the new motor to its initial position.
Install a new motor.
