If the brake disc cannot be removed, turn the brake drum until one of the holes for the wheel bolts is positioned at 80° from the vertical at the rear. Insert a screwdriver into this hole and use it to press the handbrake lever inside the brake drum toward the middle of the car.

If the brake drum still cannot be removed, turn the brake drum until one of the holes for the wheel bolts is positioned at 50° from the vertical at the front. Insert the BMW special tool into this hole until it rests against the teeth of the installation element. See also Figure W 44156.

Pull the tool outwards, see the picture. The cam of the special tool releases the lever of the setting mechanism, and due to the tooth profile, the gear of the automatic brake shoe setting device is pulled back. Repeat the process until the brake drum can be removed.

Installation

If there is wear, bore both brake drums.

Adjust the brake pads with the setting mechanism to a diameter of 228.0 mm.

Install the brake drum and secure with the retaining bolt.

Press the brake pedal (20-50 times) until the brake pads have the specified clearance.

Screw the wheel on and lower the car.

Tighten the wheel bolts crosswise to 110 Nm.
