Withdrawal
Loosen wheel bolts.
Raise the rear of the car and remove the wheel.
Pull back the handbrake cover. Fully release the handbrake cables, that is, turn the nuts to the end of the thread.
Release the handbrake.
Loosen the brake drum retaining bolt with a spanner and pull off the brake drum.
If the brake disc cannot be removed, turn the brake drum until one of the wheel bolt holes is 80°from vertical at the rear. Insert a screwdriver into this hole and press the handbrake lever inside the brake drum to the middle of the car.
If the brake drum still cannot be removed, rotate the brake drum until one of the wheel bolt holes is set to 50" from the vertical in front. Insert the BMW special tool into this hole until it rests on the teeth of the setting element. See also Figure W 44156.
Pull tool outward, see illustration. The cam of the special tool releases the setting lever and, due to the tooth profile, the gear of the automatic brake shoe installer is retracted. Repeat the process until the brake drum can be removed.
Installation
If worn, bore out both brake drums.
Adjust the brake pads with an adjusting mechanism for a diameter of 228.0 mm.
Put on the brake drum and secure with the retaining bolt.
Press the brake pedal (20-50 times), until the brake pads have the specified clearance.
Screw on the wheel, lower the car.
Tighten wheel bolts crosswise to 110 Nm.
