Removal and installation the distributor cap/distributor rotor (BMW 3 Series E36)
Removal
Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory or the radio security code memory, is erased. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in the sections "Radio" and "Removing and installing the battery".

Remove the casing from the high-voltage distributor. To do this, use a screwdriver to pry the strips at the top and bottom and move the casing to the side.

Disconnect the ignition wires from the distributor.
Unscrew the distributor cap, see figure.

Unscrew the runner with a bent 3 mm rod wrench (3 bolts).
Remove the cover.
Examination

Check the runner resistance. Specified value: 0.7-1.3 kOhm.
Check the distributor runner filling compound for cracks and burn marks; replace the runner if necessary.
The lid must be dry on the inside.
Check the contacts for wear and corrosion; replace if necessary.
Check the central carbon contact for ease of movement and absence of wear. To do this, press the contact with your finger.
Check the distributor cap for leakage currents. Leakage currents appear as thin, irregular marks on the surface of the distributor cap.
Wipe the distributor cap with a clean dry cloth and check for cracking, replace the distributor cap if necessary. After that, spray the inside of the cap with contact spray.
Installation
Install the runner and tighten it slightly to a torque of 3 Nm.
Install and secure the distributor cap.
Note: The numbering of the wires and connection contacts must correspond: ZS = ignition coil.
Insert the distributor housing so that the front slots fit into the corresponding projections. Snap the cover at the top and bottom.
Connect the ground wire to the battery.
