Checking the ignition wires (BMW 3 Series E36)

            0

Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory or the radio security code memory, is erased. Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is off, so as not to damage the fuel injection system control unit. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in the sections "Radio" and "Removing and installing the battery".

Models 316i, 318i before August 1993: Remove spark plug wire cover on cylinder head (Figure W 1218).

318is/ti models: Remove the spark plug housing from the cylinder head.

Disconnect the spark plug leads from the ignition coil (models 316i, 318i produced before August 1993: from distributor). Connect the ohmmeter and measure the resistance. The specified value is about 6 kΩ.

Models 316i, 318i produced before August 1993: Disconnect the wire between the ignition coil and the distributor and measure the resistance. The specified value is about 2 kΩ.

If the resistance is increased, clean the wire connection contacts and repeat the test. If necessary, replace the wire.

Bend the spark plug wires at a large angle near the spark plug tips and check for cracks in the wires. If necessary, replace all the spark plug wires at once.

Replacement

A new wire of the required length is cut from the coil of wire, after which the tips are put on it. This requires two special BMW devices.

Remove the insulation from the end of the wire to a distance of 6 mm. The cross-section of the wire core is 1.5 mm².

Place the tip on the ignition wire and squeeze the end of the wire with special pliers. The tip should be flush with the wire insulation.

Attention: Before installing the tip on the ignition wire of cylinder 4, it is necessary to put the DME "9" pulse sensor on the wire.

Spray the ignition wire with the product (BMW 121098). Insert the tip together with the ignition wire into a special device, see figure.

Insert the spark plug wire into the spark plug boot or into the RFI suppression connector. The boot should snap onto the wire with an audible click.

Install the ignition wires, connect the ground wire to the battery.
