Attention: When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices, such as the engine trouble memory or the radio security code memory, is erased. Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is switched off, so as not to damage the fuel injection system control unit. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in sections "Radio" And "Removing and installing the battery".
Models 316i, 318i before August 1993: Remove the ignition wire cover on the cylinder head (Drawing W 1218).
Models 318is/ti: Remove the spark plug cover from the cylinder head.
Disconnect spark plugs from ignition coil (models 316i, 318i before August 1993: from distributor). Connect an ohmmeter and measure the resistance. Set value approx. 6 com.
Models 316i, 318i before August 1993: Disconnect wire between ignition coil and distributor and measure resistance. Set value approx. 2 com.
With increased resistance, clean the wire connection contacts and repeat the test. If necessary, replace the wire.
Bend the ignition wires near the spark plug tips at a large angle and check for cracking of the wires. If required, replace all ignition wires at once.
Replacement
A new wire of the required length is cut from the wire coil, after which tips are placed on it. This requires two special BMW tools.
Remove the insulation from the end of the wire for a distance of 6 mm. The cross section of the wire core is 1.5 mm2.

Model 318is/ti:
Put a tip on the ignition wire and squeeze the end of the wire with special tongs. The tip must be flush with the wire insulation.
Attention: Before mounting the tip on the ignition wire of cylinder 4, the DME impulse sender -9- must be put on the wire.
Spray the ignition wire with (BMW 121098). Insert the tip together with the ignition cable into the special tool, see illustration.
Insert the ignition wire into the spark plug tip or radio interference suppression connector. The tip should snap onto the wire with an audible click.
Install the ignition wires, connect the ground wire to the battery.
