Note: The ignition timing is controlled by the control unit and can only be checked, but not set. The current position is determined by two sensors (one on the camshaft housing and the other on the crankshaft pulley). If there are deviations from the specified values, it is necessary to identify the failed elements of the ignition system and replace them.
Checking the ignition timing, only models 316i, 318i produced before August 1993.
Warm up the engine. Operating temperature is reached when the lower radiator water hose warms up. Oil temperature should exceed +60°C, and coolant temperature +80°C.
Zundverteiler — ignition distributor
Battery connection of the stroboscope - connecting the stroboscope to the battery
Stroboscope - stroboscope
Zundkabel fiir Zylinder 1 — ignition wire cylinder 1
Spark plug for cylinder 1 — spark plug for cylinder 1
Capacitive Stroboscope Terminal - Capacitive Stroboscope Terminal
Connect the RPM meter and stroboscope in accordance with the operating instructions.
Start the engine and let it idle.

Point the stroboscope at the arrow on the timing case cover.
Caution: Be careful when the pulley and belt are rotating.
When the ignition timing is set correctly, the top dead center mark "1" should be stationary relative to the reference mark "2" (arrow on the oil filter housing). When the top dead center mark is opposite the reference mark, the piston of cylinder 1 is in the highest position and ignition occurs.
Note: Instead of the inscription from on the latest engines there is only a notch, which is located on the 3rd or 4th stroke from the right. To make it easier, you can first apply a dot with white paint to the top dead center mark.
