Removal and installation the windshield wiper motor/rods (BMW 3 Series E46)

Removal



1. Before removing the windshield wiper motor, set it to its original position. To do this, wet the windshield with water and turn on the motor for a short time. Then stop the motor with the windshield wiper switch and return it to its final position.

2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable with the ignition off. The battery is located in the luggage compartment behind the cover on the right side. In BMW 316i, 318i cars, the battery is located in the engine compartment.

Disconnecting the battery will erase the fault memory of some control units. If necessary, read the fault memory before disconnecting the battery. Refer to Section Troubleshooting. It is advisable to carry out the work in a service station.


3. Remove the cabin air filter, refer to Section Replacing the cabin air filter element.

4. Remove the air filter box, refer to Section Removal and installation the air intake box.

5. Remove the heater shut-off wall, refer to Section Removal and installation the heater fan.

6. Remove both wiper arms, refer to the relevant section.

7. Remove the front fairing cover, refer to Section Removal and installation the fairing cover.

8. Disconnect connector "1" of the windshield wiper motor.



9. Unscrew bolt "2" of the windshield wiper console.

10. Unscrew the nuts securing the "3" wiper axles.

11. Remove the wiper rods as a set through the hole in the heater locking wall.

12. Mark the position of lever "4" in relation to the console with a felt-tip pen. Unscrew nut "5" and.

13. Unscrew the three bolts "6" securing the electric motor and remove the electric motor from the console.

Installation



14. Assemble the bars as shown in the illustration.

15. Before installing the electric motor, bring it to its original position. To do this, connect the plug, briefly connect the negative cable (-) of the battery and turn on the electric motor. Then stop the electric motor with the windshield wiper switch and let it come to the end position. Disconnect the plug, disconnect the negative cable of the battery.

16. Secure the electric motor to the wiper console with a torque of 10 Nm.

17. Install the lever in accordance with the markings on the console. Tighten the nut to a torque of 25 N·m.

18. Install the rods and tighten the 2 nuts to a torque of 12 Nm

19. Install the rubber supports of the wiper console on the axles and secure the console with a torque of 10 Nm.

20. Connect the electric motor connector.

21. Install the frontal fairing, refer to Section Removal and installation the fairing cover.

22. Install both wiper arms, refer to the relevant section.

23. Install the heater shut-off wall, refer to Section Removal and installation the heater fan.

24. Install the air filter box, refer to Section Removal and installation the air intake box.

25. Install the cabin air filter, refer to Section Replacing the cabin air filter element.

26. Connect the negative (-) battery cable with the ignition off. Set the clock.
