Withdrawal
1. Remove the rear brake disc (see paragraph 7). Note the location of all parts of the parking brake.
2. Using pliers, carefully remove the shoe return springs (pic. 17.2, a, b).
3. Remove the shoe racks. To do this, click on them and rotate them 90°. Remove struts with springs (pic. 17.3, a, b).
4. Remove both pads, then return the adjustment mechanism to its original position. memorizing its location (pic. 17.4).
5. Inspect pads for wear or damage. Replace pads if necessary. Return springs are recommended to be replaced regardless of their condition.
6. After removing the pads, clean the adjustment mechanism and check its condition. Replace defective components if necessary. Apply a small amount of brake grease to the adjuster threads and pad drive friction surfaces (BMW recommends Molykcte Paste G) (pic. 17.6). Do not allow grease to get on the pad linings.
Installation
7. Before installing, clean the back shield and apply some high temperature grease to the back shield where it contacts the pads. Do not allow grease to get on the pad linings.
8. Replace the pads and secure them with racks with springs.
9. Make sure. that the lower ends of the shoes are engaged with the drive, then reinstall the adjuster (between the top ends of the blocks) (pic. 17.9).
10. Check again. that all components are correctly installed, then use pliers to fit the upper and lower return springs onto the shoes.
11. Align the pads, then install the brake disc (see paragraph 7).
12. Before installing the wheels, adjust the parking brake (see paragraph 14).
