Parking brake shoes — removal and installation (BMW 3 Series E46)
Removal
1. Remove the rear brake disc (see paragraph 7). Remember the location of all parking brake components.
2. Using pliers, carefully remove the brake shoe return springs (fig. 17.2, a, b).

3. Remove the brake shoe struts. To do this, press them and turn them 90°. Remove the struts together with the springs (fig. 17.3, a, b).

4. Remove both pads, then set the adjustment mechanism to its original position, remembering its location (Fig. 17.4).

5. Inspect the pads for wear or damage. Replace the pads if necessary. Return springs are recommended to be replaced regardless of their condition.
6. After removing the pads, clean the adjustment mechanism and check its condition. Replace faulty components if necessary. Apply a small amount of brake system grease to the adjuster threads and the friction surfaces of the pad drive (bMW recommends Molykte Paste G grease) (Fig. 17.6) Avoid getting grease on the brake pad linings.

Installation
7. Before installation, clean the rear shield and apply a small amount of high-temperature grease to the rear shield where it contacts the pads. Avoid getting grease on the pad linings.
8. Install the pads in place and secure them with the stands and springs.
9. Make sure that the lower ends of the shoes are engaged with the drive, then reinstall the adjuster (between the upper ends of the pads) (Fig. 17.9).

10. Once again, make sure that all components are installed correctly, then use pliers to place the upper and lower return springs onto the pads.
11. Align the pads, then install the brake disc (see paragraph 7).
12. Before installing the wheels, adjust the parking brake (see paragraph 14).
