Vacuum Pump (N42 Engine Models) — Removal and Installation (BMW 3 Series E46)
Removal
1. On models with this engine, the Valvetronic system creates too little vacuum in the intake manifold than is required for the brake booster to operate. The vacuum pump is mounted on the rear of the cylinder head and is driven by the exhaust camshaft.
2. Open the hood and lift it as high as possible (see chapter 11).
3. Remove the two screws, remove the plastic cover from the top of the engine and slide it forward.
4. At the rear of the engine compartment, turn the fasteners 90° counterclockwise and remove the cabin filter cover. Remove the filter. For more details, see Chapter 1.
5. Unfasten the clips of the wire management box and remove its contents.
6. Remove the four screws and pull the cabin filter housing forward (see chapter 1).
7. In the left rear corner of the engine compartment, remove the sealing strip, detach the two fasteners and slide the trim panel forward (Fig. 21.7).

8. Unscrew the two screws and remove the air duct housing of the interior heater (Fig. 21.8).

9. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the pump, unscrew the three screws and remove the pump (Fig. 21.9). Discard the sealing ring, as you will need a new one for installation.

Installation
10. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Make sure that the pump shaft tailpiece enters the camshaft grooves (fig. 21.10). Tighten the pump mounting screws securely.
