Parking brake (BMW X5 E53)

The parking brake is designed to hold the car in place when parking on a level road or on a slight slope. When the parking brake is applied (engaged), the rear wheels are locked by the drum brake mechanism. The brake is applied by lifting the lever (Fig. 1.52), located between the front seats, which is automatically locked when released. When the ignition key is in position "2", the indicator with the symbol "P" lights up on the instrument panel.



To clean brake drums from corrosion, it is recommended to lightly tighten the brakes from time to time at low speed and on an open section of the road, in the absence of oncoming traffic.

When the parking brake is applied, the brake lights do not light.
