Power steering pump repair (BMW 5 Series E12)

            0

If the discharge pressure is insufficient, first check the tension of the pump drive belt (the normal deflection of the belt when pressing on the middle of the branch should be equal to 5-10 mm). If the pressure is not restored after adjusting the belt tension, drain the oil from the hydraulic system, loosen the belt and remove the pump.

Press lightly on the rear cover of the pump housing and remove the retaining ring.

Remove the cover, pressure spring and sealing ring.

Remove the front cover and sealing ring and take out the rotor-stator assembly.

Check the condition of the parts, replace the rotor-stator unit if necessary. Replace the sealing rings each time the pump is disassembled.

Install the rotor-stator assembly into the pump body, install and secure the front cover, ensuring it is in the correct position (see photo).

Install the pump, adjust the drive belt tension and bleed the air from the hydraulic drive (see above).

Beginning with the 1978 model year, install the power steering pump with the following in mind:
  • the fastening of the discharge pipe must be done in such a way that it does not touch the engine mount bracket;
