Motronic DME M3.1 system on 4-valve engines (BMW 5 Series E34)

            0

The DME M3.1 system on the 520i and 525i models produced since May 1990 is a development of the Motronic M1.1 system.

Instead of an air volume flow meter, an air mass flow meter is installed. The air mass flow meter has the following advantages: automatic compensation for changes in temperature and altitude, no moving parts and therefore even less wear. The principle of air mass measurement: An electrically heated heating coil is cooled by the air flowing through it. To maintain a constant coil temperature, the heating current changes in accordance with the density and temperature of the flowing air. Based on changes in the heating current, the Motronic system determines the mass of the air being sucked in and changes the amount of fuel injected accordingly.

The ignition system has no moving parts and therefore, apart from the spark plugs, is not subject to wear, see section "Ignition system" in addition, the ignition control system switches off the ignition system if it is defective (for example, damage to wires).

On models with automatic transmission, the integration of DME and automatic control further improves transmission tuning and smooths out gear shifting processes.

Caution: When working with the fuel injection device, it is necessary to maintain impeccable cleanliness, see next section.
