- Instead of an air flow meter, an air mass flow meter is installed. The air mass flow meter has the following advantages: automatic compensation for changes in temperature and altitude, no moving parts and therefore even less wear. The principle of measuring the air mass: An electrically heated heating coil is cooled by the air flowing through it. To maintain a constant coil temperature, the heating current changes in accordance with the density and temperature of the flowing air. Based on changes in the heating current, the Motronic system determines the mass of the air being sucked in and changes the amount of fuel injected accordingly. The temperature of the sucked air is measured by a special sensor in the throttle valve fitting.
- The ignition system has no moving parts and therefore, apart from the spark plugs, is not subject to wear, see section "Ignition system".
- On models with automatic transmission, the integration of DME and automatic control further improves transmission tuning and smooths out gear shifting processes.
- Since 1993, the six-cylinder engines have been equipped with a camshaft control system, abbreviated as VAN0S. In this case, the intake camshaft is rotated under oil pressure relative to its sprocket depending on the engine speed and load, which provides advantages in terms of smooth idling, torque characteristics and fuel consumption. The DME regulates the oil pressure supplied to the actuator using an electromagnetic valve.
