Adjusting the throttle cable (BMW 3 Series E36)

Caution: The gas cable is sensitive to bending and therefore requires special care during installation. A single slight bend in the cable can cause the cable to break later. Therefore, it is prohibited to install cables with bends.


On vehicles with a cruise control system ("Tempomat"), another cable is attached to the throttle lever. If necessary, this cable is disconnected in the same way as the gas cable.

Adjustment



Press the gas pedal all the way down (full throttle position) and in this position, fix the gas pedal with a suitable board inserted between the pedal and the seat.

Move the throttle lever to the full throttle position and screw in the adjusting nut "6" until the throttle cable is taut. The figure shows the intake manifold of a four-cylinder engine produced since September 1993, as well as the 318is/ti model.

Apply throttle with the throttle lever to relieve the load on the throttle cable nipple.



Pull nipple "3" out of the clamp with a narrow screwdriver.

Compress clamp "2", pull it out of the hole in the throttle lever and remove it from the gas cable "1".

Disconnect the throttle cable through the slot on the throttle lever.

Pull the cable sheath out of the rubber tip "4".

Pass the cable through the rubber tip.

Connection



Insert the gas cable through the rubber tip of the support and insert the cable sheath into the rubber tip.

Slide the plastic clamp onto the throttle cable.

Apply a little gas with the throttle lever, insert the cable into the hole in the holder, snap the clamp and insert the nipple into the clamp.

Check the throttle cable adjustment.
