Removal and installation the outer door handle (BMW 5 Series E39)

Removal

Note: The pictures show removal with the door trim installed. Removal requires 2 special BMW tools and some experience in performing the job. Otherwise, it is recommended to remove the door trim.

Remove the plug from the end of the door.

Note: The plug consists of two parts. First, you need to press the central part with a screwdriver, then unfasten and pull out the outer part.

Insert the BMW-5132D2 tool through the mounting hole and lift the locking plate "1" of the locking plate "2" over the locking protrusion "3".



Insert the BMW-513201 device through the opening of the locking plate "2" and, with the locking bar "1" raised, press it forward.



Remove the BMW-513202 tool.

Removal without the use of special tools

Remove the door trim.



Make a suitable hook from wire yourself. In this case, the end of the wire (diameter 2 mm) size X = 5 mm bend at a right angle.

Instead of the BMW-51 3201 device, insert the hook through the mounting hole in the end of the door into the eye of the locking plate.

Using the hook, move the locking plate forward until it stops.



Using a screwdriver, lift the locking strip "1" of the locking plate "2" above the locking lug. In this position, use the hook "3" to move the locking plate forward enough to provide access to the outer door handle through its opening. The figure shows the position of the locking plate with the outer door handle removed. 3 - the wire hook is inserted into the eye of the locking plate.





Press the outer door handle at the bottom with a diagonal downward movement and pull it out.

Installation

Insert the outer door handle and press it down.



Using the BMW-513201 tool or a wire hook, pull the locking plate "2" back until the locking strip locks. 1 - hole in the locking plate.

Operate the outside door handle and check that it functions properly.

If removed, reinstall the door trim.

Insert the plug from the end of the door. First secure the outer part, and then press the inner part.
