Removal and installation the door lock (BMW 5 Series E39)

Removal

Close the front door window, open the other windows.

Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. The battery is located in the luggage compartment behind the right side trim.

Warning: This will erase the contents of the storage devices. Follow the instructions in the chapter "Removal and installation the battery".

To avoid accidental electrical contact, insulate the negative terminal of the battery.

Remove the inner door trim.

Caution: Observe safety precautions when working with inflatable airbag.

Disconnect the plug connector (orange) of the side airbag. Loosen the fastening of the side airbag and move it upwards together with the cover plate, for example into the luggage compartment.

Remove the outside door handle.



Carefully detach the foam trim in the rear area of the doorway, tilt it forward and secure it in this position with adhesive tape "1".

Unfasten and disconnect the plug from the central locking actuator motor - see also Fig. W-4B341.



Disconnect nipple "1" of Bowden rod and cable "2" of Bowden rod from door lock "3".



Disconnect the plug connector of the central locking system micro switch.

Remove the Bowden rod for the interior door handle from the door frame.



Unscrew the fastener and move the lock downwards to remove it from the door.

Installation

Check if the receiver protrusion is facing down (for a leash).



Insert the lock into the door. In this case, receiver "1" (for a leash) insert the door lock upward into the lock cylinder leash.



Screw the lock to the door with three screws.

Connect the plug to the central locking system actuator motor and secure it.

Connect the microswitch plug.

Attach the nipple and Bowden cable to the lock.

Attach the Bowden rod for the inside door handle to the door frame.

Carefully glue the foam trim to the door.

Attention: the lining must not be damaged, otherwise there will be a draft in the car. The adhesive mass must be applied along the perimeter, if necessary, buy a synthetic rubber cord at a BMW service station and repair the adhesive seal.

Install the outside door handle.

Screw the side airbag to the door frame and connect the plug connector (orange).

Install the interior door trim.

Connect the battery ground (-) wire. Set the clock. Tune the radio to the transmitting stations.

Check the operation of the door lock, rods and central locking system.
