Removal and installation the door lock (BMW 3 Series E46)

To be able to move the door window with the side airbag removed, it is necessary to briefly disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. As a result, a corresponding entry is made in the fault memory. After completing the work, it is recommended to clear the memory to ensure normal operation of the airbag. Refer to Section Troubleshooting. It is advisable to carry out the work in a service station.

Removal

1. Close the front door window, other windows remain open.

2. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable with the ignition off. The battery is located in the luggage compartment behind the cover on the right side. In BMW 316i, 318i cars, the battery is located in the engine compartment.

Disconnecting the battery will erase the fault memory of some control units. If necessary, read the fault memory before disconnecting the battery. Refer to Section Troubleshooting. It is advisable to carry out the work in a service station.

3. Insulate the negative (-) battery cable to prevent accidental contact.

4. Remove the door trim, remove the door cover at the rear, refer to the relevant section.

5. Disconnect the window from the rear window lifter bus only, refer to Section Removal and installation an electric window lifter.

6. Move the window all the way up.

7. Disconnect the rear window lifter bus, take it out downwards and put it at the bottom of the door, refer to Section Removal and installation the window lift motor.

8. Driver's door: Remove the lock cylinder, refer to the relevant section.

9. Disconnect the connector at the door lock.





10. Remove cover "1" with a small screwdriver. Loosen the screw underneath until you hear a distinct click.

Observe the direction of rotation. On the driver's door, the screw rotates counterclockwise, on the front passenger door, clockwise. After this, the lock mechanism is in the dismantling position.

11. Unscrew screws "2" and remove door lock "3" with rods through the door opening.

Installation

The operation of the door lock should only be checked with the door open. If the door is closed and the adjustment of the lock is incorrect, the door cannot be opened without damaging the lining.

Do not lubricate the door lock and bracket.

12. Check if the drive lever on the lock can move. If not, loosen the locking screw. The locking screw is located under the cover "1" in the illustration.



13. Insert the lock with rods into the door. Insert the rods of the locking button through the hole in the door sheet. Do not deform the rods.

14. Secure the lock with new screws to a torque of 9 Nm.

15. Connect the connector to the door lock.

16. Driver's door: Install the lock cylinder, refer to the relevant section.

17. Secure the window regulator at the rear, refer to the relevant section.

18. Reinstall the door trim, refer to the relevant section.

There should be no people in the vehicle when connecting the battery

19. Connect the negative (-) battery cable with the ignition off. Set the clock.

Checking the operation of the door lock

The operation is checked only with the door open. If the door is closed and the adjustment is incorrect, the door cannot be opened without destroying the lining

20. Lock the pawl on the lock "3" with a screwdriver.

21. Close the door with the key.

22. Open the door with the key, open the door with the handle.



23. If the lock does not open, loosen the locking screw again and tighten it. The locking screw is located under the cover "1" in the illustration.

24. Check the operation of the door lock again.



25. Install cover "1" into the door opening.
