Withdrawal
1. Disconnect the negative cable (-) battery with the ignition off. The battery is located in the luggage compartment behind the cover on the right side. For BMW 316i, 318i, the battery is located in the engine compartment.
Disconnecting the battery clears the fault memory of some controls. If necessary, read the fault memory before disconnecting the battery. Refer to Section Troubleshooting. It is desirable to carry out work in the conditions of a service station.
2. Isolate the negative pole on the battery to prevent accidental contact with it.
3. Remove the mirror switch -1- upwards using two small screwdrivers. In this case, screwdrivers are placed at the points shown in the illustration by arrows. Disconnect the two plug connections and remove the mirror switch.
4. Remove with your fingers the visor -1- from the door on the rear end side. In this case, start shooting from the rear end. The visor is secured with four clips.
5. Remove the screws (1/2/3) screwdriver Torx T20.
The screw -1- is longer than the others. Arrows - supports for the upper visor.
6. Wring out facing from a door and disconnect in points -1-. Use a plastic wedge to push it out, eg HAZET 1965-20.
7. Pull the facing upwards from the door and disconnect at points -2- from the brackets, starting from the side of the hinges.
8. Lift up facing of a door through the lock button.
9. Disconnect a cable of an internal drive of a door. To do this, open the internal door drive lever. In this position, disconnect the white plastic clip -1- and pull the cable -2- back from the drive lever.
10. Disconnect the loudspeaker connector from the back of the casing. Disconnect the two cable ties and route the electrical wires.
11. Remove a facing of a door.
12. Check door trim clips, replace if necessary.
Before removing the airbag, be sure to read the safety rules for the airbag, refer to Section Power Steering (servo control).
13. Turn away three bolts of fastening -3 - of a lateral pillow of safety -1-. Disconnect the yellow connector from the reverse side and remove the airbag.
The fastening bolts are coated with thread locking agent and must be replaced.
14. Disconnect the cover -1- from the door along the contour. To do this, pull it a little with your fingers, then squeeze out the glue roller on the door with a plastic wedge.
Be especially careful in the lower and front part -A-. A damaged door cover must be replaced.
Installation
15. Carefully stick the cover on the door cutout. At the same time, make sure that it coincides with the holes.
Be careful not to damage the door covers, otherwise the vehicle will be drafty. The adhesive mass must be applied along the contour. If necessary, repair the adhesive seal with a BMW butyl cord.
16. Check if the negative cable is disconnected (-) battery. If not, disconnect it with the ignition off.
17. Reinstall the side airbag. To do this, dock the yellow connector on the reverse side and fix it so that a distinct click is heard. Check the tightness of the plug connection. Install the side airbag with three new screws to 8.5 Nm.
18. Check up reliability of fastening of clips - 1 - facings of a door, if necessary replace. 2 - supports of the upper brackets.
19. Pull the electrical wires from the back of the lining. Secure the cables and dock the speaker connector. If necessary, secure the mirror drive connector with adhesive tape in the cutout in the door trim.
20. Connect a cable of an internal drive of a door in the lever. At the same time, insert the clip from the front, press from the back and fix the hook.
21. Raise the door trim over the release button.
22. Install the lining from above at the brackets and press. Clap your hand if necessary.
23. Align the lining over the holes of the plastic clips and gently clasp with your palms.
24. Fasten with screws (1/2/3) door lining. When doing so, ensure that the longer screw is screwed in at point -1-.
25. Insert the top visor with four clips into the support elements and press down. Clap gently with your hands if necessary.
26. Connect the mirror switch connector and push the switch into the door trim hole.
When connecting the battery, people must not be in the car
27. Connect the negative cable (-) battery with the ignition off. Set the clock.
Differences for lining the rear door
Vehicles with electric windows:
28. Remove the power window switch from the switch up.
Vehicles without power window:
29. Remove the visor instead of the power window switch with two small screwdrivers.
30. Remove the power window handle. For this:
- Remove the visor with a screwdriver (arrow illustration).
- Remove the screw underneath.
- Remove the power window handle from the shaft along with the washer.
