Safety regulations (BMW X3 E83)

            0

Attention:

When working with airbags and seat belt pretensioners, the explosives law must be observed.

Airbags, seat belt pretensioners and some other equipment are classified as pyrotechnic devices. Pyrotechnic devices are divided into fire hazard classes depending on the amount of active substance. Classification can be determined by marking:

Failure to follow warning and repair instructions for gas generators may result in accidental activation, resulting in injury to personnel and damage to the vehicle.

This is especially true for the following nodes:
  • airbag system modules (Driver/front passenger airbags, side airbags);
  • seat belt pretensioners;
  • head NBP (ITS, AHPS);
  • active knee protection;
  • active headrest;
  • emergency stop terminal (SBK).

Attention:
  • Inspection and installation may only be performed by qualified BMW Service personnel who have undergone special training.
  • Any work on the airbag system components must be carried out only with the battery disconnected, the negative pole (terminal) insulated, and the wire connector leading to the gas generator disconnected. If only the battery is disconnected, the prescribed waiting time of 1 minute must be observed.
  • When work is interrupted, the removed unit with the gas generator must be protected from access by unauthorized persons.
  • Repair of individual components is not permitted; they must be replaced.
  • The airbag system components must not be treated with cleaning agents or lubricants.
  • The airbag system components must not be exposed to temperatures above 75°C.
  • In the event of a fall of airbag system components, as well as electronic diagnostic devices, from a height of more than 0.5 m, their installation on the vehicle is not permitted.
  • Before installation, airbag system components (including electronic diagnostic devices) it is necessary to visually check for damage and replace them if necessary.
  • The electrical components of the airbag system may only be checked when installed and only using the BMW Diagnostic System/DIS.

Attention:
  • The airbag system module can only be placed with the soft part (airbag) upwards. Otherwise, in the event of a possible fire, the generator will be thrown upwards.
  • The gas generator pyropatron must not be directed at people.
  • Ignition of gas generators in the removed state is not permitted. They must be disposed of using special measures or sent in the packaging from the new unit to BMW.
  • When performing straightening and welding work using an electric welding machine.
  • Disconnect the battery.
  • Insulate the negative pole or terminal.
  • When removing a deployed airbag module, avoid contact with the skin: wear gloves. In case of contact with skin, rinse the affected area with water.
  • Units with gas generators must be sent in the packaging from the new unit.
  • Comply with the instructions of the relevant supervisory authority and the regulations in force in the country.
