Removal and installation windshield wiper arms (BMW 3 Series E46)

Removal



1. Wet the windshield with water.

2. Turn on the windshield wiper briefly and stop it with the switch. This way the wiper stops in its original position.

3. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable with the ignition off. The battery is located in the luggage compartment behind the cover on the right side. On BMW 318i vehicles, the battery is located in the engine compartment.

Disconnecting the battery will erase the fault memory of some control units. If necessary, read the fault memory before disconnecting the battery. Refer to Section Troubleshooting. It is advisable to carry out the work in a service station.

5. Use a screwdriver to remove the covers from the windshield wiper mounts on the left and right.

7. Remove both arms from the axles using a standard puller.

The levers are very firmly seated and cannot be removed without a special tool. The opening of the puller jaws must be at least 16.3 mm. The accompanying illustration shows the BMW puller – 616000. However, the HAZET 1966-5 tool can also be used.

8. Remove the mounting bushings from the wiper arms.

9. Replace the lever and align it with the markings on the windshield.

10. Install the mounting sleeve "1" on the axle "2" and press it flush with the lever "3".

11. Tighten the lever to a torque of 25 Nm and after 15 minutes again to a torque of 25 Nm.

12. Place the cover on the mounting nut.



13. Install the second lever in the same way.

14. Connect the negative (-) battery cable with the ignition off. Set the clock.
