Window lifters (BMW 3 Series E46)
Opening and closing windows

After turning the ignition key to position 1:
If you press the switch without going beyond the point of increased resistance, the glass will move for the entire time the switch is held in the pressed position.
When you briefly press the switch beyond the point of increased resistance, the start-stop mode is activated, in which the glass moves automatically. To stop it, you need to press the switch again in exactly the same way.
The window is closed in a similar manner, for which you need to pull the switch.
When the rear doors are equipped with electric windows*, separate switches are installed under the windows.
After turning off the ignition:
You can still use the windows for 15 minutes if none of the front doors are opened and then closed again. To open, press the switch past the point of increased resistance.
When leaving the car, always take the ignition key with you so that, for example, children cannot operate the windows and injure themselves.
For information on opening and closing windows automatically by turning the key in the door lock or using the radio remote control, refer to Section Keys, single lock and anti-theft system.
Trauma-protective function
At the top of the window opening there is a contact strip*. If you touch it when the glass is being raised, the glass will immediately stop and lower slightly.
This feature can be disabled (for example, when an outsider tries to enter the car from the outside), if you hold the window switch in the start-stop control mode position.
Switch-fuse*

With its help you can prevent the windows from being turned on from the rear seat, for example by children sitting there.
If there are children in the rear seat, always press the safety button. Uncontrolled closing of the windows can cause injuries.
