Window glass and window lifters (BMW X5 E53)
Window lifters
The window lifts can be used after turning the ignition key to position "1" or higher. The control panel is located on the armrest of the driver's door (Fig. 1.28) for all doors except the rear. Each door has its own two-position switch.

When the switch is pressed without going beyond the point of increased resistance and held in this position, the glass moves upward for as long as the switch is held in this position.
When the switch is pressed briefly beyond the point of increased resistance, the glass moves upward automatically, in start-stop mode, until the switch is pressed again in exactly the same way.
Passengers in the cabin have their own control panels for the door windows, only those located next to them.
After the ignition is switched off, it is possible to use the windows for another 15 minutes, even if the ignition key is in position "1", "0" or removed, but only until one of the front doors is opened. Automatic lowering and raising of the windows is possible by turning the key in the door lock or using the remote control.
To lower the windows, close the door, turn the key and hold it in the "Unlock" position. To raise the windows, close the door, turn the key and hold it in the "Lock" position. If you release the key, the glass will stop moving. All of the above also applies to the sunroof.
Trauma-protective function
The windows have rack contacts on the inside of the frame. If you touch the rack contact at the top edge of the opening when the glass is raised, the glass will stop and drop slightly. This function cannot be implemented in the start-stop control mode and holding the switch in the extreme position.
Attention! In any case, it is necessary to ensure that there are no obstacles in the path of the glass.
Safety switch
To prevent injuries, especially to children, a key is provided (arrow, Fig. 1.29) blocker for rear door window controls. This prohibition also applies to the adjustment of the electric rear seats.

Warning: Always press the safety switch when there are children in the rear seats.
