Windscreen wipers front and rear (BMW X5 E53)
The windshield wipers and washers are controlled by a lever switch (Fig. 1.26) located to the right of the steering column and has seven positions (modes):
The left wiper arm is partially hidden under the hood. To change the wiper blades or in extreme cold, you may need to set the wiper to a nearly vertical position and move it away from the glass.
To install the windshield wiper in a vertical position, you must:
Periodic (interval) the mode is characterized by the fact that the intervals between turning on the windshield wiper can be adjusted in stages using the knurled wheel 7 (Fig. 1.26), which has four positions. The automation additionally changes them depending on the speed of the vehicle.
When the car is stopped with the windshield wipers in mode "2" (normal frequency) the windshield wipers automatically switch to mode "1" (periodic).
When the car is stopped with the windshield wipers operating in mode "3" (increased frequency), the windshield wipers automatically switch to mode "2" (normal frequency),
Spraying the windshield with washing liquid (mode 5) is accompanied by a short-term switching on of the windshield wipers.
To avoid reducing visibility, use the washers only if you are sure that the fluid will not freeze on the windshield.
Always check for the presence of special antifreeze liquid in the washer reservoir. Lack of liquid may cause the windshield washer pump to fail. It is advisable to avoid using water. The filling capacity of the windshield washer reservoir is 7.8 l.
The heating of the windshield washer nozzles (nozzles) is switched on automatically when the ignition key is turned to position "2".
The jets ejected by the nozzles must be directed at the windshield so that it is effectively washed even at high speed. Adjustment should be carried out at a service station using a special needle.
The rear window wiper of the BMW X5 E53 is controlled by the same lever switch as the windshield wiper (Fig. 1.27)
The rear window wiper control has three positions:
When operating in mode "1" and reverse gear is engaged, the windshield wiper switches to continuous operation mode.
The frequency of the rear window wiper activation can be programmed. To do this, you need to:
The programmed interval is erased approximately 10 seconds after the lever is moved to the "0" position or after the engine is stopped.
The original entry can be found on the portal BMWMan.ru

- "O" - initial position, windshield wipers do not work;
- "1" — windshield wipers operate in periodic mode taking into account information from the rain intensity sensor;
- "2" - windshield wipers operate at normal frequency;
- "3" - windshield wipers operate at increased frequency;
- "4" - one-time activation of windshield wipers;
- "5" - windshield wash;
- "6" - windshield washers operate according to a special program:
- "7" — windshield wiper interval controller.
Starting position
The left wiper arm is partially hidden under the hood. To change the wiper blades or in extreme cold, you may need to set the wiper to a nearly vertical position and move it away from the glass.
To install the windshield wiper in a vertical position, you must:
- turn on the ignition;
- move the lever switch to position (1,2 or 4);
- and turn off the ignition as soon as the brushes reach the vertical position.
Caution! Do not forget to press the windshield wipers against the glass before turning the ignition key to position "1" or "2". Otherwise, the windshield wipers will be broken.
Periodic mode
Periodic (interval) the mode is characterized by the fact that the intervals between turning on the windshield wiper can be adjusted in stages using the knurled wheel 7 (Fig. 1.26), which has four positions. The automation additionally changes them depending on the speed of the vehicle.
Normal frequency
When the car is stopped with the windshield wipers in mode "2" (normal frequency) the windshield wipers automatically switch to mode "1" (periodic).
Increased frequency
When the car is stopped with the windshield wipers operating in mode "3" (increased frequency), the windshield wipers automatically switch to mode "2" (normal frequency),
Spraying the windshield
Spraying the windshield with washing liquid (mode 5) is accompanied by a short-term switching on of the windshield wipers.
To avoid reducing visibility, use the washers only if you are sure that the fluid will not freeze on the windshield.
Always check for the presence of special antifreeze liquid in the washer reservoir. Lack of liquid may cause the windshield washer pump to fail. It is advisable to avoid using water. The filling capacity of the windshield washer reservoir is 7.8 l.
Windscreen washer nozzles
The heating of the windshield washer nozzles (nozzles) is switched on automatically when the ignition key is turned to position "2".

Glass Rear Window Cleaner
The rear window wiper of the BMW X5 E53 is controlled by the same lever switch as the windshield wiper (Fig. 1.27)

The rear window wiper control has three positions:
- "O" starting position:
- "1" periodic operation mode of the rear window wiper:
- "3" rear window wash.
When operating in mode "1" and reverse gear is engaged, the windshield wiper switches to continuous operation mode.
The frequency of the rear window wiper activation can be programmed. To do this, you need to:
- move the lever to position "1" and immediately return to position "O";
- wait the required time, but no more than 30 seconds, and again move the lever to position "1";
- the period of time you wait is programmed.
The programmed interval is erased approximately 10 seconds after the lever is moved to the "0" position or after the engine is stopped.
