The car can be equipped with a 4-cylinder in-line petrol engine, a 6-cylinder petrol engine or a 4-cylinder turbodiesel. The power unit is located along the car and is removed upwards using a special crane.

Equipment options

Model 316i, 318i

4-cylinder. petrol engine M43TU with a volume of 1.9 l – two-valve, with an overhead camshaft. The camshaft is driven by a chain. The valves are driven by a roller rocker arm. Two balancing shafts located under the crankshaft serve to compensate for engine vibration. The valve drive is roller. The intake tract has a variable length DISA.

330i Engine Specifications

330i Engine Specifications

Model 320i, 323i, 325i, 328i, 330i

The 6-cylinder M52TU petrol engine has a cylinder head and cylinder block made of aluminium alloy. The alloy has improved thermal conductivity and is lighter than cast iron. The 4-valve cylinder head has two camshafts with a chain drive with the VANOS camshaft adjustment mechanism. In this case, both camshafts, depending on the engine speed and load, rotate relative to the corresponding sprocket in such a way as to obtain the optimum valve opening moment. The unit is controlled by the engine control unit.

Model 320d

In the 4-cylinder turbodiesel M47, two overhead camshafts have a chain drive and act on the valves through a roller rocker arm. The second chain drives the high-pressure fuel pump. The valve drive is roller. The diesel engine has a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG) and charge air cooling. The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy. The engine is equipped with an oxidation catalytic converter and an exhaust gas recirculation system.

Model 330d

The 6-cylinder M57 turbodiesel delivers exceptionally high torque thanks to its common rail design (common rail) high pressure, through which fuel is supplied to the injectors. The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy. The engine is equipped with an oxidation catalytic converter and an exhaust gas recirculation system.

All engines:

Equipped with hydraulic valve clearance compensators.

Lubrication of engines is carried out by an oil pump, which in 6-cylinder engines (320i, 323i, 328i) is located in the front part of the oil pan and is driven by a chain from the crankshaft. In models 316i, 318i the oil pump is located in the cover of the timing gear box at the end of the crankshaft and is connected to it via a splined connection. The sucked oil enters through holes and through pipes to the bearings of the crankshaft and camshaft, as well as to the working surfaces of the cylinders.

The coolant pump is located at the front of the cylinder block and is driven by a V-belt, which also drives auxiliary units, namely the generator, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor.

It should be noted that the engine cooling system must be filled all year round with a mixture of anti-corrosion and anti-freeze agent and lime-free water. The radiator fan is electrically driven. In a 6-cylinder engine with air conditioning, there is also a radiator fan on the coolant pump shaft, which is connected via a viscous coupling at the appropriate temperature. By means of so-called performance cooling, in gasoline engines, the engine management system regulates the thermostat opening temperature and optimizes the engine temperature to achieve minimum fuel consumption.

All petrol engines use detonation-controlled ignition timing control.

The radiator electric motor may turn on when the engine is not running and the ignition is off. Due to the presence of a heat stagnation zone in the engine compartment, this may happen repeatedly. When working in the engine compartment and a warm engine, it is necessary to take into account the possibility of turning on the electric fan. Solution: Disconnect the fan electric motor connector. A maintenance-free engine management system is provided for the operation of the ignition and preparation of the fuel-air mixture, which eliminates the need to adjust the ignition timing or idle speed as part of maintenance.
