The vehicle can be equipped with an in-line 4-cylinder petrol engine, a 6-cylinder petrol engine or a 4-cylinder turbodiesel. The power unit is located along the car and is pulled up by a special crane.
Equipment options
Model 316i, 318i
4-cylinder. gasoline engine M43TU with a volume of 1.9 liters - two-valve, with an overhead camshaft. The camshaft is driven by a chain. The valves are driven through a roller rocker. To compensate for engine vibration, there are two balancing shafts located under the crankshaft. Valve drive - roller. Intake tract with variable length DISA.
330i engine specifications
Model 320i, 323i, 325i, 328i, 330i
6-cylinder. The M52TU gasoline engine has an aluminum alloy cylinder head and cylinder block. The alloy has improved thermal conductivity and is lighter than cast iron. The 4-valve cylinder head has two chain-driven camshafts with VANOS camshaft adjustment. In this case, both camshafts, depending on the speed and load of the engine, are rotated relative to the corresponding sprocket in such a way as to obtain the optimum moment for opening the valves. The unit is controlled from the engine control unit.
Model 320d
In the 4-cylinder M47 turbodiesel, two overhead camshafts are chain driven and act on the valves through a roller rocker. The second circuit drives the high pressure fuel pump. Valve drive - roller. The diesel engine is turbocharged with variable turbine geometry (VTG) and air cooling. The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy. The engine is equipped with an oxidation catalytic converter and an exhaust gas recirculation system.
Model 330d
6-cylinder. the M57 turbodiesel is characterized by exceptionally high torque due to a common pressure line (common rail) high pressure, through which fuel is supplied to the injectors. The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy. The engine is equipped with an oxidation catalytic converter and an exhaust gas recirculation system.
All engines:
Equipped with hydraulic valve clearance compensators.
Engine lubrication is carried out by an oil pump, which for 6-cylinder engines (320i, 323i, 328i) is located in front of the oil pan and is driven by a chain from the crankshaft. For models 316i, 318i, the oil pump is located in the camshaft cover at the end of the crankshaft and is connected to it through a spline connection. The sucked-in oil enters through the holes and through pipelines to the bearings of the crankshaft and camshaft, as well as to the working surfaces of the cylinders.
The coolant pump is located at the front of the cylinder block and is driven by a V-belt, which simultaneously drives the auxiliary units, namely the generator, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor.
Please note that the engine cooling system must be filled year-round with a mixture of anti-corrosion and anti-freeze agents and lime-free water. The radiator fan is electrically driven. In a 6-cylinder engine with air conditioning, a radiator fan is additionally located on the shaft of the coolant pump, which is connected via a viscous coupling at the appropriate temperature. With so-called performance-based cooling for petrol engines, the engine management system regulates the opening temperature of the thermostat and optimizes the engine temperature to achieve the lowest fuel consumption.
All petrol engines use knock-controlled ignition timing.
The radiator motor can turn on when the engine is not running and the ignition is off. Due to the presence of a thermal stagnation zone in the engine compartment, this can happen repeatedly. When carrying out work in the engine compartment and a warm engine, it is necessary to take into account the possibility of turning on the electric fan. Remedy: Disconnect the fan motor connector. There is a maintenance-free engine management system for ignition and air/fuel mixture function, eliminating the need for ignition or idle adjustments as part of maintenance.
