Clutch specifications (BMW 5 Series E12)
The clutch is dry, single-disk, with a central pressure spring. The clutch release drive is hydraulic, with automatic clearance adjustment.
Clutch brand: Fichtei und Sachs (F&S).
Clutch type:
* "520" i: 450-520 kgf.
** "520": yellow index.
*** Under a load of 600 kgf.
Inner diameter, mm: 19.05.
Pusher piston stroke, mm: 32.00.
Inner diameter, mm: 20.64.
Pusher piston stroke, mm: 20±1 ("525" and "528": no more than 23).
Since model year 1977 on BMW "525", "528" and the "528i" was equipped with an F clutch&S type MF 240 Sph with the following distinctive features.
Color index:
Permissible imbalance of the driven disk, no more than, gf cm: 20.
Slave disk type: 240 PSD (without color index).
Thickness of the driven disk removed from the vehicle, mm: 10-10.9.
Thickness of the driven disk under a load of 600 kgf, mm: 9.0-9.6.
Permissible end runout of the driven disk when measured at a diameter of 238 mm, mm: 0.6.
Inner diameter of clutch release bearing, mm: 38+0,112+0,050.
Total height (size "B", see photo) clutch release bearing, mm: 52.5±0.4.
Flange height (dimension "C" of clutch release bearing, mm: 25.5±0.15.
Since the 1982 model year, some characteristics of the MF 215 K clutch have been changed.
Overall height of clutch release bearing, mm: 51.
Height of clutch release bearing flange, mm: 25.
The BMW "525" and "528" were equipped with an F clutch&S type MF 240K Sph with driven disc 240 PSD, the characteristics of which are identical to the clutch type MF 240 K, except for the dimensions of the clutch release bearing, which are the same as the clutch release bearing type MF215 K.
The tightening torques for the main threaded connections are the same as on 1980 model year vehicles, with the exception of the master cylinder mounting bolt, which is tightened to a torque of 1.2-1.4 kgf·m.

- Clutch housing to engine block mounting bolts: M8: 2.5-2.7; M10: 4.7-5.1.
- Bolts for fastening the clutch housing to the flywheel: 2.2-2.4.
- Pipe connections of the main and working cylinders: 1.3-1.6.
- Bolts for fastening the lower cover of the clutch housing: M8: 2.5-2.7; M10: 4.7-5.1.
- Clutch housing to engine block mounting bolt: M8: 2.5-2.7; M10: 4.7-5.1; M12: 7.8-8.6.
- Bolt for fastening the clutch housing to the flywheel: 2.2-2.4.
- Hydraulic drive pipeline fittings: 1.3-1.6.
- Clutch master cylinder mounting bolt: 2.2-2.4.
- Clutch slave cylinder mounting bolt: 2.5-2.8.
