Cylinder head (BMW X3 E83)

Removal and installation the cylinder head



1. Remove both exhaust manifolds.

Note:
  • After removing the exhaust manifolds:
  • Reinstall the bracket with the engine mount cushion and remove tool 000200.


2. Remove the air filter housing together with the air flow meter.

3. Remove the cylinder head cover.

4. Remove all spark plugs.

5. Remove the intake manifold.

6. Unscrew the coolant drain plug from the cylinder block.

7. Drain and dispose of the coolant.

Note: When installing, it is necessary to replace the drain plug sealing ring.


Tightening torque: 25 Nm.

8. Bleed the cooling system and check it for leaks.

9. Remove the thermostat housing.

10. Disconnect the cooling system line.

Note: If it is not possible to disconnect the cooling system line.


11. Loosen the hollow bolt (1) and disconnect the pressure oil line of the VANOS valve timing system actuator.

Note:
  • When installing, it is necessary to replace the O-ring of the circular cross-section of the cooling system pipeline.
  • If necessary, replace the O-rings of the hollow bolt (1).


Tightening torque of hollow bolt (1): 32Nm.

12. Remove the Doppel-VANOS system actuator.



13. Remove the camshafts together with the support strips.

14. Unscrew the bolts securing the timing belt cover to the cylinder head.

15. Unscrew the bolts and remove the chain guide.

16. Unscrew the cylinder head mounting bolts from the edges to the middle in sequence (14...1).

17. Remove the cylinder head.



18. Clean the sealing surface of the cylinder head and block, if necessary, remove any remaining sealant with a hardwood scraper.

Note: When doing this, make sure that no sealant residue gets into the oil and coolant supply channels.


19. Check the centering bushings for damage and correct installation.

20. Apply Drei Bond 1209 elastic sealing compound to the joints with the timing belt cover (see BMW Parts Delivery Service materials).

21. Replace the cylinder head gasket.

Attention:

Various cylinder head mounting bolts for the M52TU engine:
  • MO x 95 for engines with grey cast iron cylinder blocks.
  • MOx 110 for engines with aluminum cylinder blocks.

Cylinder head bolts can only be used once.

There should be no oil in the threaded holes of the cylinder block and timing cover.

Risk of cracks and incorrect tightening torques:




22. Install the cylinder head.

23. Lightly lubricate the mating surface of the washers and the threads of the new cylinder head mounting bolts with oil.

24. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence (1...14).

Tightening torque: 30 Nm + 90° + 90°.

Note: Use tool 009120 to tighten to the specified angle.
