Removal and installation or replacing the oil pump (N46)
Please note: The oil pump and balance shafts are a single unit and cannot be separated.
1. Lower the front axle.
2. Remove the oil pan.

3. Remove the screws.
4. Rotate the suction pipe (1) of the oil pump and remove it in a downward motion.

Note: When installing, it is necessary to replace the sealing ring (2) on the suction pipe (1).

Note: The hole for locking in the B-MT position is located on the intake side below the starter.
5. Turn the engine by the central bolt and lock the flywheel using tool 115120.

Note:
- Only for modification with automatic transmission.
- The picture shows without automatic transmission.
Attention:
- On engines with automatic transmission, next to the hole (1) for fixing in the TDC position, there is a large hole (2), which can be confused with the hole for fixing.
- If the flywheel is locked in the correct hole (1) using tool 119190, the engine will no longer turn on the central bolt.

Please note: Left-hand thread.
6. Unscrew the nut (1).

7. Press the tensioner bar (2) back and secure it using tool 113340.
8. Unscrew the bolts (3).

9. Prepare a bracket from a suitable material (welding wire).
- A = approx. 40 mm.
- B = approx. 60 mm.

10. Using the bracket (4), pull the sprocket (5) on the oil pump shaft until the toothed ring disengages.

11. Unscrew the bolts (1).
Caution: An assistant must hold the oil pump balance shaft block (3) while loosening the bolts (2).
12. Unscrew the bolts (2).

Note:
- The tensioner (7) of the oil pump chain is secured with a guide pin (6).
- When removing the balance shaft block (3) - oil pump, ensure that the guide pin (6) does not turn.

13. Lift the balance shaft - oil pump block (3) from the crankcase so that the centering bushings are no longer fixed.
14. Remove the oil pump balance shaft block (3) in a backward motion.

15. Check the centering bushings (1) for damage and installation position; replace if necessary.

Note: An assistant is required for installation.
16. Install the oil pump drive sprocket.
17. Insert the guide pin (6) into the hole of the chain tensioner (7) so that the block (3) of the oil pump balance shafts is adjacent to the chain tensioner (7), hold the chain tensioner (7).

18. Install the block (3) of oil pump balance shafts on the centering bushings.

19. Replace the bolts (2).
20. Insert the bolts (2) and tighten.
Tightening torque: 25 Nm + 90°.
21. Insert the bolts (1) and tighten.

22. Using the bracket (4), pull the sprocket (5) on the oil pump shaft so that the toothed ring disengages.

Note: Execution 1.
23. Turn the balance shafts so that tool 119330 can be placed on the ends of the shafts from the intake side.
24. Remove tool 119330 again.

Note: Execution 2.
25. Install the 115140 tool under the balance shafts (1) on the ground support surfaces (2) until it stops (3).
Note: The balance shafts (1) are now locked in place.
26. Remove tool 115140 again.

Note: Execution 3.
Note:
- During installation, it is necessary to adjust the counterweights of the balance shafts.
- Both counterweights should now point towards the oil pan.
27. Place tool 118700 on the flats of the balance shafts.
Note:
- The balance shafts (1) are now fixed.
- Do not remove tool 118700 until the oil pump sprocket is secured.
Note: Only version 3 is available in the BMW parts catalog.

28. Place the sprocket (5) on the oil pump shaft so that it engages with the toothed ring.
29. Remove tool 113340.

Note: Option 1.
30. Push tool 119330 from the intake side.
31. Check the relative position of the balance shafts.

Note: New variant.
32. Install the 115140 tool under the balance shafts (1) on the ground support surfaces (2) until it stops (3).
33. Check the relative position of the balance shafts.

34. Insert the bolts (3) and tighten.

Please note: Left-hand thread.
35. Screw on the nut (1) and tighten.
Tightening torque: 30 Nm.
36. Remove all equipment.
37. Assemble the engine.
