Troubleshooting the shock absorber and rear axle (BMW X5 E53)

Table 14.2. Shock absorber troubleshooting

Shock absorber strut breakdowns	the bump stop is faulty	check the additional spring, replace if necessary
Shock absorber strut breakdowns	shock absorber wear	replace shock absorber
Knocking/noise in the shock absorber strut	the shock absorber mount has become loose	secure the shock absorber
	the upper shock absorber support is out of order	replace upper shock absorber support
	the lower rubber-metal joint of the shock absorber is faulty	replace shock absorber
	the newly installed shock absorber was stored in a horizontal position with the piston rod retracted	remove the shock absorber and keep it at room temperature in a vertical position with the piston rod extended for 24 hours

	radial, lateral runout of the rim	check and replace wheel rims if necessary
	tire radial runout	adjust tires, replace if necessary
Roar	the rubber-metal hinge of the rear axle beam is faulty	replace rubber-metal hinge
	the rubber-metal hinge of the rear axle gearbox is faulty	replace rubber-metal hinge
	the rubber-metal joint of the transverse suspension arm is faulty	replace wishbone
	the rubber-metal joint of the guide lever is faulty	replace the guide lever
Knock	the rubber-metal hinge of the rear axle beam is faulty	replace rubber-metal hinge
Knock	the ball joint in the wheel bearing support is faulty	replace ball joint
Poor dynamic performance or deterioration of directional stability	the rubber-metal hinge of the rear axle beam is faulty	replace rubber-metal hinge
	the rubber-metal/ball joint of the transverse or guide arm of the suspension is faulty	replace transverse or guide arm
	the ball joint in the wheel bearing support is faulty	replace ball joint
	the rubber-metal hinge of the rocker arm is faulty	replace rocker arm
	incorrect rear wheel alignment angles	measure the chassis parameters, adjust the rear wheel alignment angles if necessary
Deterioration of controllability when exiting a turn and (or) insufficient longitudinal stability of the rear of the vehicle	the rubber-metal hinge of the rear axle beam is faulty	replace rubber-metal hinge
	the rubber-metal hinge of the rear axle gearbox is faulty	replace rubber-metal hinge
