If it is necessary to take measurements on the camshaft. The specified values of axial clearance: 0.065 - 0.15 mm; radial clearance: 0.02 - 0.061 mm.

Removal

Models produced before August 1993. (m40 engine): Remove the timing belt and unscrew the camshaft timing pulley.

Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose "6" from the cylinder head cover.

Unscrew the cylinder head cover and remove it with gasket "1" and cover "3".

Unscrew the cylinder head cover and remove it with gasket «1» and cover «3».

Models produced since September 1993. (m43 engine): Turn the engine by the crankshaft pulley to a position where one of the camshaft lobes above the rocker arm points upward. In this position, install the BMW device and press the valve. Remove the rocker arms one by one and fold them in the order of subsequent installation.

Models produced since September 1993. (m43 engine): Remove the cylinder identification sensor from the gearbox cover. Set the engine to the top dead center position of cylinder 1 and unscrew the camshaft drive chain sprocket.

Loosen bolts "1" and "2" and remove the oil line. Note: Mark the position of the bolt "2" gaskets for subsequent installation.

Unscrew the 4 bearing caps and the bearing "F". Stack the bearing caps in the order of subsequent installation

Remove the camshaft.

Remove the old camshaft oil seal.

Installation

Lubricate the camshaft bearings with engine oil and insert the camshaft.

Models produced before August 1993. (m40 engine): Coat the surface of the bearing cap "F" in the marked areas (see photo) with a thin layer of non-thickening sealant, such as Curil.

Reinstall all bearing caps and tighten bolts evenly to 15 Nm. On models produced before August 1993. (m40 engine) make sure that the centering bushings "7" are installed on the first bearing cap.

Insert oil pipe "14". Be sure to replace gaskets "16" of the middle hollow bolt "15". Tighten bolts "17" with a torque of 6 Nm and bolts "15" with a torque of 11 Nm.

Models produced before August 1993. (m40 engine): Lubricate the new seal "13" with engine oil and push it as far as possible with a piece of pipe of the corresponding diameter. Then carefully press it in until it stops. BMW service stations use pressing sleeve 331190 for this.

If required, measure the camshaft clearance. Specified values for axial clearance: 0.15 - 0.33 mm; radial clearance. 0.02-0.54 mm: cam height 34.83-34.95 mm.

Put the casing on the camshaft, install the cylinder head cover with the gasket and tighten the bolts to 10 Nm. Replace the damaged gasket.

Connect the crankcase ventilation hose.

Models produced before August 1993. (m40 engine): Install the timing belt.

Models produced since September 1993. (m43 engine): Install the sprocket with the chain applied. The arrow on the chain sprocket should point upwards. Align the slots in the middle. Tighten the 4 sprocket mounting bolts to 10 Nm. Install the cylinder identification sensor. Caution: Remove the crankshaft and camshaft locking devices.

Models produced since September 1993. (m43 engine): Turn the engine by the crankshaft pulley to a position where one of the camshaft lobes above the rocker arm points upward. In this position, install the BMW device and press the valve. Install the rocker arms in their original positions.

Install the cylinder head cover and connect all connections on the engine.

Start the engine at idle speed. If the rocker arms are knocking (unusual engine noises), do not let the engine run at more than 2000 rpm until the knocking stops. At the same time, the hydraulic compensators are filled with oil and automatically set the required valve clearances.

Caution: Keep the removed valve clearance compensators upside down for no more than 10 minutes, as the oil filling will slowly leak out and the compensator will become inoperative.
