Attention. Operations and instructions for all diesel engines can be found in the 525tds engine chapter (engine M51S). Only the differences that apply to the 520d engine are described below. The method of tightening the cylinder head bolts is also suitable for the M47 engine.
Remove vacuum pump, see relevant chapter.
Remove cylinder head cover.
Lock engine crankshaft at cylinder 1 TDC with special tool BMW 11 2 300 or other suitable pin. To do this, insert the pin through the hole in the cylinder block without the starter into the hole in the flywheel.
Lock the chain tensioner in the compressed position. To do this, unscrew the hexagon socket plug from the end face of the cylinder block -arrow- and insert a BMW pin 113 340 or similar into the hole.
Loosen the top chain guide.
Unbolt both sprockets to camshafts. When doing this, hold the camshafts on the hexagons on them. To fix the intake camshaft in a workshop for BMW vehicles, use BMW tool 11 6 320.
Remove the camshaft bearing caps and lay them in accordance with the markings. Remove camshafts.
Remove the valve levers from the cylinder head and install them in the correct sequence.
Mounting tightening torques:
- Plug hole for fixing the chain tensioner: 30 Nm (replace gasket);
- fastening sprockets to camshafts: 20 Nm and tighten by 35°in the direction of tightening.
