M52 series engine camshaft - removal and installation
Since this operation necessarily requires a special device, it is better to carry it out in the workshop. This describes the removal of the camshaft on the removed cylinder head. You can work on the installed head, however, you need to perform preliminary work up to unscrewing the bolts of the block head.
If necessary, take measurements on the camshaft: axial play should be 0.15-0.33 mm, radial play 0.02-0.054 mm.
Loosen and remove all bearing cap bolts.
Withdrawal
Remove the cylinder head. Loosen the pins.
A special tool is required to remove the camshaft. Its task is to hold all the camshaft bearings in their installation positions when the bearing shells are removed. The instructions apply to both camshafts, the order in which they were removed does not matter.
Remove the spark plugs.
Install the tool and fix it in the spark plug holes of the first and fourth cylinders.
By turning the eccentric shaft of the tool, fix the bearing caps.
Loosen and remove all bearing cap bolts.
Attention: Align the cover for the first bearing of the intake camshaft using dowel sleeves. To prevent misalignment of the camshaft, unscrew the bolts of the cover of the first bearing.
Loosen the fixture and remove it.
Remove bearing caps and camshaft. Arrange the bearing caps in order to ensure that they are in their original positions during installation. The bearing caps for the exhaust camshaft are labeled A1 to A7, and those for the intake camshaft are labeled E1 to E7.
If needed (e.g. when removing valves), then the entire bearing bar is removed (2) with valve lifters. Pay attention to the centering bushings. Bearing bars in place (4) labeled A for the outlet side and E for the inlet side.
Caution: The valve lifters may slide down from the bearing bracket if they are not secured. In specialized workshops, suction cups are used, which are installed on top of the pushers and prevent them from falling out. Mark the valve lifters. They will then need to be installed in their original places if they are removed.
Attention: Removed tappets must not be kept upside down for more than 10 minutes, as otherwise they will be filled with engine oil slowly, and automatic valve clearance compensation will not be carried out.
Installation
Attention: If the camshaft has been removed, the following must be observed: hydraulic valve lifters expand without camshaft load and require some time after installation for them to contract again. Because of this, the valves can open more than the position of the camshaft and contact the piston. In this regard, it is necessary to withstand a certain time between the installation of the camshaft and the installation of the cylinder head: at + 20°C (room temperature) - 4 minutes, at + 10°С - 11 minutes. After installing the head of the block, you must wait another 30 minutes until the engine can be cranked.
Attention: If the camshaft was removed with the cylinder head installed, then the crankshaft must be rotated approx. 30°in the normal direction of rotation by the hexagon on the pulley through the TDC position. Due to this, the piston will not stand in its highest position, and the valves will not hit it. Install the camshaft and wait the time indicated above. After that, you need to return the crankshaft to the TDC position and install the drive chain.
Check valve lifters for wear (scratches, gouges) and, if necessary, replace them.
Lubricate the camshaft bearings and insert the camshafts so that the ends of the cams of the intake and exhaust valves of the first cylinder are facing each other.
Insert the bearing bracket with the valve lifters installed into the cylinder head. The centering sleeves must be in place.
Insert the bearing shells in accordance with the marks made earlier in the same places from which they were removed.
Fit the tool and secure the covers and bearing shells.
Tighten the bearing cap bolts to 15 Nm.
Loosen the fixture and remove it. Screw in the spark plugs.
Install the cylinder head.
M51 series diesel engine camshaft - removal and installation
Since these operations necessarily require a special tool, it is recommended to carry out the work in the workshop. The camshaft can be removed on both installed and removed cylinder heads. This describes the removal of the camshaft from an already removed head. It is possible to work with the installed head, however, it is necessary to carry out preliminary operations up to unscrewing the bolts of the cylinder head, guided by the instructions in the corresponding section.
If necessary, take measurements on the camshaft: the value of the radial play should be 0.04-0.081 mm, the value of the axial play 0.15-0.33 mm.
Withdrawal
Remove the cylinder head.
A special tool is required to remove the camshaft. Its job is to hold all the camshaft bearings in their installed position when the bearing shells are removed. Install the tool and secure it with the valve cover bolts.
By turning the eccentric shaft of the tool, press the bearing caps.
Loosen all bearing cap bolts.
Loosen the fixture and remove it.
Remove the bearing caps and camshaft. The bearing caps are numbered 1 to 7 on the exhaust side.
If necessary, for example when removing valves, then remove the valve lifters. In a specialized workshop, suction cups are used, which are installed on top of the pushers to pull them out. After removal, the pushers must be installed in their original places.
Attention: Removed tappets should not be in an inverted position for more than 10 minutes, otherwise they will be filled with engine oil slowly, and automatic valve clearance compensation will not be performed.
Installation
Check valve lifters for wear (scratches) and, if necessary, replace them. Install them in the same places as before removal.
Lubricate the camshaft bearings and insert the camshaft so that the ends of the cams of the intake and exhaust valves of the first cylinder are pointing up.
Insert the bearing shells in accordance with the numbers in the same positions as before removal.
Install the fixture and press the bearing caps with liners.
Tighten the bearing cap bolts evenly in a criss-cross pattern, moving ½ turn from the outside to a torque of 15 Nm.
Loosen the fixture and remove it.
Install the cylinder head.
Attention: If the camshaft has been removed, the following must be observed: hydraulic valve lifters expand without camshaft load and require some time after installation for them to contract again. Because of this, the valves can open more than the position of the camshaft and contact the piston. In this regard, it is necessary to withstand a certain time between the installation of the camshaft and the installation of the cylinder head: at + 20°C (room temperature) — 4 minutes, at +10°С — 11 minutes. After installing the head of the block, you must wait another 30 minutes until it becomes possible to crank the engine.
Attention: If the camshaft was removed with the cylinder head installed, the crankshaft must be rotated approx.

Installation position of the camshaft
Withdrawal
If necessary, take measurements on the camshaft: the value of the radial play should be 0.04-0.081 mm, the value of the axial play 0.15-0.33 mm.
Measuring the end play of the camshaft
Remove the cylinder head. Remove the spark plugs. Remove the oil distribution pipeline. Putting the corresponding camshaft cams up, remove the levers. Place the levers so that they can be installed in their original position.
Remove the camshaft bearing caps and remove the shafts. Remove the hydraulic tappets and lay them out in a vertical installation position. After removing the pushers, you need to install them in their original places.
Installation
The camshaft is installed in the sequence withdrawal, taking into account the recommendations given in previous section.
