Model 316: Unscrew the fuel pump "G" and remove the insulating flange "H" and gaskets. Pull out the pusher a little.

Adjust maximum clearances on all valves.

Place the clamping frame on the cylinder head (bMW 111040 fixture). In this case, the short side of the clamp must be facing the exhaust manifold.

Screw in the tension bolt, compressing the valve springs and simultaneously relieving the camshaft.

Insert the locking pins "1" and unscrew the guide washer "3" from the front side of the cylinder head (arrows).

Carefully pull the camshaft forward.

Installation

Thoroughly wash all installed parts in clean gasoline. Clean contact surfaces.

Lightly lubricate the camshaft with engine oil and insert it into the cylinder head.

Caution: Be careful not to damage the bearing surfaces.

The camshaft has an index of 2 = 264°.

Screw on the guide washer. Replace the poorly secured plugs "2" by inserting new ones coated with a locking paste, such as Loctite.

Caution: After installing the guide washer, the camshaft should rotate easily.

Turn the camshaft so that the mark on the camshaft flange coincides with the protrusion on the cylinder head. In this case, the camshaft is in the top dead center position of the 1st cylinder.

Unload the rocker arms and remove the pressure frame.

Model 316: Install the fuel pump (see section "Removing and installing the fuel pump").

Insert the oil pipe, while installing the sealing rings in their previous position. Screw in the hollow bolt and tighten it to a torque of 12 Nm. Tightening torque on the 316i model produced since September 1988: 10 Nm. on the six-cylinder engine: 8 Nm.

Install the cylinder head (see section "Removing and installing the cylinder head").
