Removal and installation the camshaft (BMW 5 Series E34)

Note: Description is given only for M20 engine.


Remove the cylinder head and install it on 2 wooden spacers.

Remove the rocker arm shafts.

Loosen the camshaft toothed pulley mounting bolts. Remove the distributor runner adapter, casing and camshaft pulley. Do not lose the cylindrical pin.

From the front side of the cylinder head, unscrew the two cover bolts.

Carefully pull the camshaft forward.

Installation



Thoroughly wash all parts in gasoline, clean contact surfaces.

Lightly lubricate the camshaft with engine oil and carefully insert it into the cylinder head.

Caution: Do not damage the shaft support surfaces.


Check the integrity of the O-ring and seal in the cover and replace if necessary.

Carefully install the cover so as not to damage the seal. In workshops, a funnel-shaped bushing BMW-112212 is used for this. Screw on the cover.

Check the axial play of the camshaft.

Engine - Maximum allowable value, mm:
  • M20 - 0.2
  • M21 — 0.15-0.33
  • M30 — 0.03-0.18

Position the camshaft pulley so that the cylindrical pin fits into the hole in the camshaft.

Install the cover and adapter and tighten the camshaft mounting bolt to 70 Nm.

Install the rocker shafts.

Install the cylinder head.
