Belt tension (BMW 5 Series E34)

            0

Loosen bolt E just enough to allow the tension roller to move under the action of the spring.

Turn the engine to the top dead center position. This will tighten the toothed belt under the force of the tensioner spring.

Turn the engine to the top dead center position. This will tighten the toothed belt under the force…

Check the valve timing. When the crankshaft is at the top dead center, the mark on the toothed pulley of the camshaft N should coincide with the mark on the cylinder head "arrows". At the same time, the mark on the flange of the crankshaft K should overlap the protrusion on the casing.

In this position, tighten bolt E first and then bolt F (See Fig. W-1040).

Otherwise, remove the timing belt again, align the pulleys according to the marks and re-apply and tension the timing belt.

Caution: When the timing belt is tensioned, all marks must be aligned, otherwise serious damage to the engine may occur.

Install the lower timing belt cover and the generator tension bar without tightening the fasteners.

Screw the upper timing belt cover with the engine lifting hook.

Attach the rubber cover from below, pull it forward and snap it onto the edge of the upper trim.

Screw on the generator tension bar.

Connect the cable channel under the distributor.

Connect the oil pressure switch connector.

Install the vibration damper and tighten to 23 Nm.

Install and tension the V-belt.

Insert the distributor housing.

Screw on the runner and distributor cap.

Note: To monitor the timing belt replacement intervals, attach a sticker to the cylinder head indicating the date and mileage at the time of belt replacement.

Install the engine compartment hood.
