Removal and installation the timing belt (BMW 5 Series E34)
Note: As part of the maintenance schedule, the timing belt must be replaced every 4 years. If the timing belt is removed, it must be replaced regardless of its service life.
Removal
Remove the engine compartment hood.
Remove the distributor housing. To do this, use a screwdriver to lift the clamps at the top and bottom.
Use a screwdriver to lift the cable channel.

Unscrew the ignition distributor cap 1 and remove it together with the ignition wires. This requires an 8 mm socket wrench, for example HAZET850-8 with 865.

Using a 3 mm socket wrench, unscrew the distributor rotor 2 and remove it together with ring 3.
Unscrew the upper cover of the 4 toothed belt.
Unfasten the rubber cover.
Lift the cable channel under the distributor and move it to the side.

Set cylinder 1 to the top dead center position. To do this, engage the gearbox in neutral and tighten the handbrake. Turn the crankshaft by the belt pulley in the direction of engine rotation.
(See Fig. W—1086) Turn the crankshaft until the notch 1 on the toothed pulley of the camshaft coincides with the mark 2 on the cylinder head. At the same time, the top dead center mark on the flywheel should coincide with the reference mark. To turn the engine, you can also engage 5th gear and move the car with the handbrake released on a level surface.
Unscrew vibration damper 1 from the crankshaft. At the same time, engage 1st gear, tighten the handbrake, thus holding the belt pulley.
Disconnect the reference point sensor connector under the intake manifold.
If equipped, disconnect the cylinder identifier connector.
Disconnect the oil pressure switch connector.
Loosen the generator tension bar nut on the engine block.
Remove the upper timing belt cover.
Unscrew the tension bar completely and remove the lower casing.

Loosen bolts E and F and press tension roller R with a screwdriver.
Tighten bolt E.
Remove the timing belt.
Caution: When the timing belt is removed, do not turn the engine if possible, otherwise you may seriously damage the pistons and valves.
Installation
Caution: When applying the timing belt, neither the camshaft nor the intermediate shaft should be out of position. Otherwise, severe engine damage may occur or the engine will not develop full power. After tensioning the timing belt, it is recommended to check the installation of the crankshaft and camshaft again.
