Removal and installation the timing belt cover (BMW 7 Series E38)

1. Remove the oil pan (see section Removal and installation the upper section of the oil pan) and temporarily install the front axle beam in its original place.

2. Remove the cylinder head (see section Diesel engine M57).

13. Screw tool No.13 5 191 into the fuel injection pump sprocket (1). Mark the direction of chain movement and screw in the bolt of tool No.13 5 191. Remove the fuel injection pump drive sprocket with the drive chain.

14. Remove the gasket (1). Check the guide bushings (2) for damage and correct installation; replace if necessary.

15. Clean the mating surfaces, install a new gasket.

The gasket must be dry during installation.


16. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Before installing the timing chain cover, the chain must be installed. Due to the precise fixation relative to the shaft, the front crankshaft oil seal is replaced only after installing the cylinder head and oil pan.
