2. Remove the cylinder head (see section Diesel engine M57).
3. Remove the generator (see chapter Engine electrical systems).

4. Unscrew the A/C compressor mounting bolts (see chapter Engine cooling, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems), disconnect the connector (1), remove the A/C compressor and secure it to the side.

5. Remove all bolts on the bracket (2) and remove the compressor bracket.

6. Remove the cooling system hose (1) together with the tank (2).

7. Unscrew the bolts (1), remove the power steering pump (2) and secure it to the side.
Do not remove the servo lines.

8. Install tool No.11 6 460 on the vibration damper.
Due to the removed A/C compressor bracket, shortened bolts must be installed at points (1).

9. Loosen the nut (1), unscrew the bolts (2) securing the tensioner (4) and pull out the tension arc (3) forward. Remove the tensioner.

10. Remove the bolts (1).
New bolts will be required for installation.

11. Remove all the bolts of the timing chain cover (1) and water pump (2).
Rotate tool No.11 3 340 (3) so that it does not come out when removing the timing chain cover. Carefully remove the timing chain cover. Mark the direction of chain movement and remove it.

12. Press the tensioner bar (1) in the direction of the arrow and remove the chain tensioner using tool No.11 3 340. Remove the tensioner bar from the hinge pin (2). Unscrew the bolt (3) and remove the chain guide (4) in the direction of the arrow. Loosen the fuel injection pump nut (5).

13. Screw tool No.13 5 191 into the fuel injection pump sprocket (1). Mark the direction of chain movement and screw in the bolt of tool No.13 5 191. Remove the fuel injection pump drive sprocket with the drive chain.
During installation, any position of the sprocket relative to the high-pressure fuel pump is allowed.

14. Remove the gasket (1). Check the guide bushings (2) for damage and correct installation; replace if necessary.
15. Clean the mating surfaces, install a new gasket.
The gasket must be dry during installation.
16. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Before installing the timing chain cover, the chain must be installed. Due to the precise fixation relative to the shaft, the front crankshaft oil seal is replaced only after installing the cylinder head and oil pan.
