Removal and installation the cylinder head cover (BMW 5 Series E34)

Engine M20



Removal



Removal


Unscrew the support plate F.

Unscrew the support plate F.


Disconnect the ventilation hose "arrow".

Remove 8 bolts and nuts and remove the cylinder head cover.

Installation



Check the integrity of the cylinder head cover gasket and replace if necessary.

Place the cylinder head cover on the cylinder head and tighten it very slightly.

Tighten nuts and bolts in sequence 1 to 8 to 9 Nm.

Warm up the engine and check the cylinder head cover for leaks.

Engine M21



Removal



Remove the air hose between the air filter and the turbocharger, after loosening and pulling back the clamps.

See Figure W - 1095

Disconnect the brake booster hose from fitting 8.

Loosen the three timing belt cover bolts without unscrewing them,

See Figure W - 1096



Remove air hose 7, having first loosened clamp 8.

Disconnect hose 9 from oil separator 1, having first loosened clamp 10.

Loosen bolts 3/4 of oil separator 1.

Unscrew 4 cap screws and remove the cylinder head cover.

8 Vacuum pump

Installation



Check the integrity and absence of cracks of the cover gasket and rubber ring 4 (See Fig. W - 1095) and, if necessary, replace.

Insert and lubricate the rubber ring with engine oil.

Install the cover gasket, install the cylinder head cover.

Insert the threaded bushings with new sealing rings and tighten them crosswise to a torque of 15 Nm.



Check the oil separator sealing ring, replace if necessary. Install the oil separator.

Tighten the timing belt cover bolts.

Caution: Tighten the cylinder head cover first, then the timing belt cover.


Put on the hoses and secure them with clamps.

Engine M30



Removal



Remove the idle speed control valve from the air intake hose. First disconnect the connector and unscrew the compression nut.

Disconnect the air flow meter connector.

Loosen the air intake hose clamps. Remove the 3 retaining clips from the bottom of the air flow meter. Remove the air hose from the air flow meter, disconnecting the crankcase ventilation hose.

Remove the ignition wires from the coil and spark plugs.

Disconnect the distributor housing.

Unscrew the ignition wire harness and set it aside.

Tighten 8 nuts and 1 bolt on the front side of the cylinder head cover distributor and remove the cover.

Installation



Check the integrity of the gasket.

Tightening torque 10 Nm, tighten the bolt last.

M50 Engine



Removal



Removal


Remove the cover and disconnect the ignition coil connectors, while folding the metal brackets upward.

Unscrew the ignition coils from the cylinder head and remove.



Unscrew the ignition coils from the cylinder head and remove.


Unscrew the cylinder head cover.

Note: Pay attention to the location of the rubber pads under the bolts for subsequent installation.


Installation



Replace damaged gaskets. When applying the gasket, pay special attention to the correct positioning of the cutouts in the front part of the cylinder head

Subsequent installation is carried out in the reverse order. Uniformly tighten the ignition coil and cylinder head cover mounting bolts with a tightening torque of 10 Nm.

Connect the ignition coil connectors and secure them with metal brackets.
