Particularly strong valve knocks can be caused by loose rocker arm sliders.

Caution: When reinstalling, the valve drive parts must be installed in their original positions. To do this, they must be stacked in the order they were installed when removed.

Removal, four-cylinder engine

Remove the camshaft (see section "Removal and installation valves").

Remove the camshaft (see section «Removal and installation valves»).

Unscrew the ignition distributor flange (arrows).

Unscrew the ignition distributor flange (arrows).

Move the rocker arms and thrust rings. Pull out the retaining rings "5" and remove the locking pins "6".

Knock out the rocker arm axle with a punch.

Remove the rocker arms with springs, washers and thrust rings.

Installation

Installation

Check the rocker arms: replace worn rocker arms or rocker arms with loose sliders (arrow).

When replacing the rocker arm, transfer the through bolt "5", eccentric "6", washer "7" and nut "8" to the new rocker arm. In this case, the eccentric should be installed with the thickened side down and the hole outward. Screw in the bolt so that its beveled side faces the rocker arm protrusion. Then tighten the nut.

Note: The bolt and nut have a fine thread M6 x 0.75.

Attention: Check rocker arm axles, replace worn axles.

Attention: Check rocker arm axles, replace worn axles.

Insert the rocker arm shafts and align them so that the cylinder head bolts fit into the recesses. The sequence of installing the valve drive parts is: spring "1", washer "2", rocker arm "3", thrust ring "4", retaining ring "5". A - rocker arm shaft on the exhaust valve side. E - rocker arm shaft on the intake valve side.

Please note: The latest short springs can be installed together with the long springs.

Insert the locking pins "6".

Insert the locking pins «6».

Caution: The intake rocker shaft "7" is open at the rear. The exhaust rocker shaft "2" must be plugged. If the plug is loose or missing, insert a new plug with sealing compound, such as Loctite 270.

Caution: The intake rocker shaft «7» is open at the rear. The exhaust rocker shaft «2» must be…

Screw on the ignition distributor flange "1" with a new gasket "2" and a new sealing ring "3".

Install the camshaft (see section "Removal and installation the camshaft").

Removal, six-cylinder engine

Remove the cylinder head and place it on 2 wooden blocks.

Unscrew the oil pipe.

Remove the toothed belt from the upper toothed pulley (see section "Removal and installation the timing belt, six-cylinder engine").

Unscrew the adapter from the camshaft toothed pulley.

Unscrew the camshaft toothed pulley.

Adjust the maximum clearances of all valves (see section "Checking and adjusting valve clearances").

Remove the rocker arm axle plugs.

Remove the camshaft retaining plate.

Remove the spring clips from the rocker arms.

Remove the exhaust rocker arms. The cams of the 6th cylinder should be moved away from the rocker arms. Move the rocker arms of the 1st cylinder inward and turn the camshaft toward the intake valves until all the rocker arms are unloaded. Then pull out the rocker shaft.

Remove the intake rocker shaft. Turn the camshaft toward the exhaust valves and move the rocker arms until all rocker arms are unloaded. Then pull out the rocker shaft.

Remove the rocker arms.

Installation

Caution: Replace worn rocker shafts and rocker arms.

Install the rocker arms so that the large oil holes face down toward the valve guides and the smaller oil holes and retainer plate slots face inward.

Place the spring clamps on the rocker arms so that the surface of the clamp fits into the recess of the rocker arm shaft.

Insert the retaining plate into the recess of the rocker arm shaft.

Insert plugs.

Tighten the camshaft timing pulley to a tightening torque of 70 Nm.

Tighten the adapter with a tightening torque of 60 Nm.

Install and tension the timing belt (see section "Removal and installation the timing belt, six-cylinder engine").

Screw on the oil pipe.

Install the cylinder head (see section "Removal and installation the cylinder head").

Adjust the valve clearances (see section "Checking and adjusting valve clearances").
