So, the engine, separated from the transmission, is on the floor of the workshop. Oil is drained and all coolant removed. This is sometimes not the case as coolant and oil are trapped in the cylinder block and leak out in small but noticeable amounts during disassembly, so prepare accordingly.
Clean the outside of the engine with gasoline or some kind of cleaner. Wipe and dry the engine.
Cover your work surface with clean paper and have small jars ready to store small parts.
You will need a bath, a stiff brush, and a clean, lint-free rag. There must be enough space to stow the engine components in the order in which they will be removed from the engine.
When disassembling the cylinder head, it is important that the valve elements are installed in the same place when they were removed from the subsequent assembly, therefore, before disassembly, some way of marking them should be considered, for example «graduation №1».
It is desirable to have a set of metric wrenches - open-end, socket and overhead, as well as hex keys for bolts with a sealed hex head. You can buy a long socket wrench that can be inserted into the torque handle. This will greatly facilitate the removal and installation of the cylinder head.
After the engine has been cleaned, place it on a workbench and mount it securely so that the cylinder block is vertical. This is worth taking care of, as some of the bolts are very tight, and if you don't secure the engine, it could tip over while you struggle with it. The engine with all its accessories is quite heavy, so a sturdy workbench is essential.
