Catalytic converter (BMW 3 Series E46)

            0

The catalytic converter reduces the toxicity of exhaust gases.

Only unleaded petrol may be used.

Even a small amount of tetraethyl lead is enough to completely disable the oxygen sensor and catalytic converter.

To avoid possible damage and to ensure smooth operation of the engine, the following rules must be observed:
  • Be sure to carry out all established maintenance work.
  • Make sure to refill the tank on time.
  • If the engine starts to run irregularly, turn it off immediately.
  • Towing start is only possible with a cold engine. Otherwise, unburned fuel will get into the catalytic converter. It is better to use auxiliary cables to start the engine.

Avoid other situations in which fuel does not burn completely or does not burn at all, such as frequent or prolonged use of the starter with short intervals between starts, multiple unsuccessful attempts to start the engine (this does not mean starting or stopping an engine that is in good working order in all respects), engine operation with the spark plug cap removed.

Be sure to follow the above recommendations, otherwise unburned fuel will enter the catalytic converter. This will result in the risk of overheating and damage to the catalytic converter.

When a catalytic converter is in operation, no matter what vehicle it is installed on, high temperatures develop. Heat shields mounted in the exhaust area must not be removed or coated with anti-corrosion mastic. Care must be taken to ensure that hot parts of the exhaust system do not come into dangerous proximity to flammable materials while driving, idling or parked (grass, leaves, straw, etc.). Otherwise, there is a risk of their ignition, associated with the risk of serious injury to victims and significant material damage.
