Disc brakes (BMW 3 Series E46)

            0

Disc brakes provide optimum braking efficiency, braking force distribution and load capacity.

Low mileage, long-term parking and low loads cause corrosion of the brake discs and contamination of the brake pads, since during braking the minimum force of pressing the pads to the discs, which is necessary for self-cleaning of disc brakes, is not developed.

Corroded discs create a characteristic noise effect when the braking system is operating, which cannot be eliminated even by prolonged braking.

Use only brake pads approved by BMW. Otherwise, the vehicle's approval will be invalidated.

Control Features

In damp weather or heavy rain, it is advisable to brake every few kilometers by lightly pressing the pedal briefly. At the same time, be careful not to create problems for other road users. The heat generated during braking will dry out the brake discs and pads.

As is known, optimal braking efficiency is achieved not with locked wheels, but with them rolling on the verge of locking. The ABS system provides this mode automatically. If it fails, periodic braking should be used if possible (refer to Section Peculiarities of driving a car).

Driving on long or steep descents on mountain roads will not lead to a loss of braking efficiency if you drive in a gear or in a position of the AT selector lever that requires minimal braking.

By downshifting (right up to the first) gear or by moving the AT selector lever to position 1 or 2, you can also increase the braking effect of the engine.

If this is not enough to slow the car, then avoid prolonged braking at below average intensity. Instead, it is better to (watching the situation from behind) brake the car by pressing the pedal vigorously and, if necessary, continue braking with short pauses (in periodic mode). During breaks, the brakes will cool down, which will protect them from overheating and allow you to maintain full braking power.

Never drive with the clutch depressed, with the gearshift lever or AT selector lever in neutral, and especially with the engine off. In neutral, there is no engine braking effect, and with the engine off, the brake booster does not work.

The movement of the brake, clutch and accelerator pedals must not be obstructed by doormats, carpeting or other objects.
